  • Simple, peaceful site just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Llangorse Lake; 10 minutes to local waterfalls
  • Five minutes’ drive to two pubs; raised firepits and barbecues allowed
Breaking into the Brecon Beacons National Park is a piece of cake from Lodge Field Rural Campsite. Just outside the national park, 20 minutes’ drive from Llangorse Lake and 45 minutes from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, this simple, dog-friendly site is well-based for a whirlwind of outdoor activities, from pony trekking and gorge walking in the national park to paddleboarding and windsurfing on the lake. What will your lodgings look like? Well, this is a rural site and that’s the tune of the five-acre field, which has 12 native trees, countryside on all sides and simple facilities including mains drinking water and chemical waste disposal (you’ll need your own toilet facilities to do your business). You'll spot the Black Mountains from here - handily, the activity centre five minutes’ drive away runs rock climbing, caving, canoeing and other activities there. Hay-on-Wye’s just 10 minutes’ drive away too, where canoe hire or pony trekking are some of the ways to get moving. You might want to hole up in one of the town's cafés or pubs afterwards, but for those of you keen to keep moving, there are walking and cycling trails around the site – and two friendly local pubs five minutes’ drive away for another pitstop. You won’t be twiddling your thumbs in the evening either, as raised firepits and barbecues are permitted on site. As the saying goes, you’ll need to take only photographs and leave only footprints by taking all your rubbish home, as there are no bins provided on site.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: We have stayed here twice now and have had an amazing experience both times. The site is big enough for you to be completely away from other campers which is perfect for the dogs. There is a lovely walk down to the village pub which takes about 20 minutes. This is as close to wild camping as it gets and we absolutely love it. The views are incredible and if you are lucky to have a clear night the stars are amazing. The owners are both lovely too and will do anything they can to accommodate. Can’t wait to come back!

Disliked: Nothing!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Great site as always, very friendly host. 4th or 5th time coming here and definitely won't be our last. Our car decided it didn't want to start when we were about to leave, luckily the host was nice enough to come and jump start it for us!

Local attractions

How to get the blood pumping first? Well, Llangorse Lake (20 minutes’ drive) will surely make your heart rate rocket, thanks to its activity centre. Canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and windsurfing are some of the ways to get out on the water, and those of you looking for a lighter activity can hire out a dinghy, rowing boat or pedalo (or go fishing, if that's your kind of thing). Topping mountain peaks may already be on your to-do list, but if not, Pen y Fan (an hour and five minutes) should be high on your list. The mountain is the tallest peak in Wales and there's a four-mile circular walk to the top (a great photography spot). Down this direction but a lot lower down (underground, to be precise) there are the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (45 minutes) too. With all the natural formations around – and that includes the local waterfalls at Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (10 minutes) – it’s easy to forget about the towns, but you won’t want to miss out on the Georgian Crickhowell (25 minutes) and its Norman motte and bailey castle, Talgarth’s working watermill (10 minutes) or Brecon’s (20 minutes) markets and cathedral.
