  • Farmstead site just outside the south edge of Snowdonia National Park
  • Three miles from Machynlleth and 30 mins' drive from Aberdyfi beach
  • Trees to climb, streams to paddle in and woodlands to explore
If you’re seeking an escape from urban life, Penrhosmawr Holidays, a scenic family-friendly site on a working farmstead three miles from Machynlleth, might be just what you need. Penrhosmawr is a top spot for a return to nature: the site is less than 10 minutes’ drive from the edge of Snowdonia National Park, where you can hike, walk and cycle, have a go at loads of watersports, toss out a line at one of the fishing sites, or try out some more high-octane outdoor activities, like abseiling, canyoning and ziplining. You won’t be lacking in nature back on site either – the farm has plenty of trees for kids to climb, streams to paddle in and acres of paths and woodlands to wander around. You can take it even further and go foraging for your own wood from the land around the farm for barbecues and campfires… Busy days are an inevitably at Penrhosmawr, so make sure you’re well fed for your adventuring: start your day with a breakfast pack from the farm, then stay fuelled with supplies from Machynlleth throughout the day. In the evenings, fire up the barbecue or bag a table at one of the restaurants within five minutes of the site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Owner appeared friendly when we spoke with him on telephone. Cows and sheep in near by field.

Disliked: Hardly any flat surface to pitch tent. All on a slope, the grass really long to the point where your shoes and trousers were soaked just trying to find a place to pitch up. Toilets were dirty and smelled really really bad. We had to park the car on a grassy slope and climb hill with tent to be able to pitch up. No where for the children to play as they were slipping and getting soaked son fell in animal poo that was all over the field. Didnt even pitch up we left and paid to stay elsewhere. Not as advertised. Had a lovely stay in nearby campsites. We had booked for 2 plots and just cut our losses and paid elsewhere.

From the manager: Wow!! Just wow! I rang you and asked if you were ok... you replied with "one of the children are ill and we have gone home" You told a bare faced lie to my face and have the audacity to leave a review with more lies!! There are no animals on the campsite! Secondly it has poured down with rain?? Staying dry when it's pouring with rain would be difficult! And thirdly try telling the truth in future it may well get you a refund! Glad you don't want to stay again!

Beautiful place and I'll be staying here again.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely scenery and very quiet. We were camping to go to the bike park down the road and it was ideal for this. We walked into town a couple of times to a pub, a bit long but perfectly doable in nice weather. I was going to arrive after 8pm and was still allowed in to the campsite at 9pm on the first night which was very helpful. Toilet was clean.

Disliked: Showers could've been a bit cleaner but was fine just wore sliders in the shower. Also only had one hook in the cubicle but had a bench outside the cubicle in the shower block and was so quiet no one else was about to worry about putting stuff there. Thought it was a bit expensive especially for the showers

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The most incredible views - it really is a truly stunning place. The owners were very friendly and came to check in on us and say hello. Very, very quiet. I had an amazing night's sleep the first night as it was so dark and quiet. Lots of wildlife. A sense of freedom - no actual pitches. Just find somewhere you like and camp there. It felt more natural.

Disliked: Very basic facilities and no warm water. Lots of sheep poo and slopes. The farmhouse is a little way along the road and there was a group of people being noisy on the second night. It made me feel aware of my vulnerability as a single mum with my kids. Remember your torch! It's very dark.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Not a lot to be honest

Disliked: Had I not driven so far with two excited children I'd have turned around and driven home. The facilities on site were dirty, smelly and broken . No toilet paper provided even though toilet paper holders were present. The floors were dirty. The bin was overflowing . There were old storage heaters in the ladies. Broken toilet seats. A step ladder actually IN one of the showers. The facilities for washing up had rubbish laying around in bags and boxes that weren't removed In the two nights we stayed. There were no bins down on the camping field. When we arrived there was no1 around so had to call... to be told to wait by the toilet blocks and she would be down after she arrived back from town. We waited 25 minutes before I text her to ask if we were allowed to pitch up... by this time it was raining and dark. Myself and two young tired children. We did not see the owners at all during our stay, even though I had asked about a fire pit one owner said no outright and the female said she would sort it when she came to check on us (this never happened). We ended up buying our own. Considering we were the ONLY people booked in that weekend I would have at least expected the facilities to be clean and functional. Communications between myself and the booking site and then further the owners initiated the owners telling me my stay would be refunded.... and I am.still waiting...

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This campsite was nice and peaceful and not too busy. It was easy enough to get into town for a bite to eat and just a 40 minute drive from Aberystwyth. The owners were really friendly and very helpful. We had a little stream next to our pitch which was so relaxing to wake up to!

Disliked: I don't think our neighbours on the first night paid any attention to the 10.30pm-9am quiet hours which was a little annoying but that wasn't the site's fault. Just drunk people being drunk people! There was no soap in the bathrooms either

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful place with breathtaking views, the campsite is clean and well maintained ( just the showers that could probably do with a bit of updating but still useable) the people that run the campsite are lovely, my car broke down and they couldn't do enough for me to help me everyday that they could!!! The kids loved being able to be run about, make new friends and getting back to nature with campfires, river hunting and playing with kites, rolling down the hills, we've made some lovely memories and will definitely return again!

Liked: Fabulous! Henry is always so welcoming and helpful ☺️ and the campsite is in such a wonderful location close to the town but you feel in the middle of nowhere! Despite the weather we had a wonder 3 nights as a family of 5 ! Can't wait to come back next year.
