Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very accommodating staff, lovely location and views! Was a bit scared of the compost toilet at first but was pleasantly surprised, cleaned regularly and well maintained! Lovely walks nearby! Food truck was a nice surprise located on level 2! Lots of space- would recommend getting there early to get the best pick of the place! Look forward to returning soon!

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very laid back atmosphere, you just call the owner when you arrive and they’ll come visit your pitch for you to pay the bill. You can rent a burner and wood for use. The view is spectacular on the site, there’s green fields for miles around, and a few sheep and Alpacas to see as well. There are compost toilets on site to use, but no shower facilities which is stated on the website.

Disliked: It is far from shops so stock up on necessities before you pitch up.

Liked: Really enjoyable stay at a wild, remote site. Friendly owners and relaxed feel. Great views. Might be quite exposed in the wind as its on a hill, but we were fine

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very relaxed site and owner, just turn up and park where you like, the track up to the site is a little rough but if you take your time is no issue at all. Wasn't brave enough to go beyond Hill 2 on our stay as it was a little wet and windy didn't want to get stuck! Hill 2 had a compost toilet, chemical toilet waste facility and the coco diner so was happy to stay on that hill, even with the misty weather the view was still beautiful. Will definitely return and hopefully be able to spend a little more time outside with a firepit etc.

Disliked: Nothing, definitely enjoyed the wild camping and try something different compared to usual sites. Just be aware when they say wild camping this is what they mean, don't expect a shower / toilet block!

Local attractions

As you’re surrounded by Powys hills, it may be hard to know where to start exploring – if you’re on foot, Fishpools Forest (five minutes’ drive) is a good option, with a slew of way-marked woodland walks leading past lakes and hilly viewpoints to waterfalls including Water Break-Its-Neck (25 minutes). Another option nearby is Elan Valley (half an hour), where hikes lead to a series of awe-inspiring Victorian dams, and there are scenic picnic spots by the side of River Marteg in Gilfach Nature Reserve (both half an hour). On two wheels? Saintswell Practice Track and Race Centre (half an hour) has MX tracks from gentle to challenging. Prefer to get active on the water? There are kayaks and rowing boats for rent at Llandrindod Lake (20 minutes) – just be sure to keep a look out for the Welsh dragon sculpture spouting water instead of fire in the middle of the lake. Curious kids may appreciate trips to Valley View Falconry (20 minutes) to handle birds of prey and see them fly, or guided tours (May to October only) of the observatory at The Spaceguard Centre (25 minutes) to learn about asteroids and comets.
