  • Eco-friendly pop-up site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • An easy 10-minute walk from Crickhowell; Raglan 25 minutes' drive
  • Lovely mountain views; access to canalside walks and bike rides
A Powys pop-up site where you can park the car and then spend your days exploring on foot? That’s the deal at Camp Crick, in the gorgeous Usk Valley 10 minutes’ stroll from the pretty and historic market town of Crickhowell. The views from here are fine indeed – the site looks out at the Sugar Loaf and Table Mountain, with Llangattock Mountain behind. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal runs past the fields too, for easy access to miles of safe cycling and walking along the towpath. For more walking options there are plenty of trails that lead off up into the mountains (see if you can find the very rare floating bog below the escarpment on Llangattock Mountain…) The car’s unlikely to see much action at all around here, in fact – that proximity to town means that you can easily walk to Crickhowell’s independent shops, cafés and pubs (and in fact there are a couple of pubs offering great food even closer in the village of Llangattock). Naturally, the team here have an interest in preserving this pretty part of the world, so they’ve set the site up as an eco-friendly off-grid place to stay. Generously sized pitches are tucked away within the hedges and well spaced so you’ll have plenty of room to soak up the surrounds and look out for the wildlife (resident tawny owls and buzzards are often seen, along with a wide range of songbirds). Facilities include compost loos (with biodegradable loo roll provided), cold showers and washing-up stations using spring water (you’ll need to boil it before drinking). There’s no parking by pitches (in order to preserve the peace and the wild flowers), but trailers and wheelbarrows are provided to haul your kit.

Liked: Owners we're really nice and helpful. Highly recommended the site and will be coming back. The local pub that serves Welsh fashioned Jamaican Food was incredible and only a 10 minute walk. The fire pit was a big hit with the kids.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Welcoming Annabel came to meet me and gave me all the information I needed, including suggestions for two local walks that I did. Quiet pitch with no traffic noise. Good location, 10 minutes on foot to bus stop and all Crickhowell amenities.

Disliked: Nothing. It's basic but you should be aware before you book, cold showers which was fine with me.

Primitive grass and earth campervan campsite

Liked: Campsite was friendly, nicely spaced out. Pitches were good fire pits were a nice touch

Disliked: The toilets weren’t for me, the bales of hay and weeds growing in made me feel on edge as someone scared of spiders. But they were clean as could be and if you’re not bothered by spiders I wouldn’t see a problem with them

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Loved it.. so quite, big space for tent... only 15mins drive to Abergavenny and a very short 10min walk to crickhowell centre... many toilets and showers on site.. very very friendly staff.. separate carpark from your pitch with is brilliant as its safe for children to run and play and keeps the grass area in great condition

Disliked: The 1st visit to the toilet.. as soon as you are over the eco waste, it's fine.. toilets are very clean and fun decorations
