  • Remote site on a farm on the northern fringes of the Brecon Beacons
  • Pen y Fan 20 minutes’ drive; Brecon Mountain Railway 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; traditional pubs within a five-minute walk along the A40
Looking for a peaceful hideaway in the vicinity of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons)? Somewhere with a remote vibe but easily accessed, without having to navigate unforgiving, narrow, possibly unpaved roads? Well, Gilfach (which – appropriately enough – means ‘hideaway’ in Welsh) might just be the place for you. Tucked away in the valley of the River Usk, this site feels blissfully isolated. However, it is only a five-minute drive from the A40, which makes it possible to reach the market towns of Brecon (to the east) and Llandovery (to the west) in about 20 minutes. Gilfach sits on the northern fringes of the Brecon Beacons, which translates into epic hikes for you and your canine companion, who is a welcome guest here. However, please be mindful of the fact that you are staying on a farm (a centuries-old farm at that), and that there will be other animals around – from sheep and horses, to the owners’ dogs – so keep your dog on a lead while on site. If the only hike you want to go on is the one leading to a well-poured pint of ale and a home-cooked meal, you’re in luck: there are a couple of (dog-friendly) watering holes within a five-minute walk, just across the river. Along the A40, there are also a petrol station and a couple of shops where you can stock up on sausages or anything else you might fancy cooking on your campfire.

Local attractions

Ready to tackle Pen y Fan (20 minutes’ drive)? There are several trails to the summit, and you can let your fitness levels decide which one you choose, whether the easy route, which starts about halfway up the mountain, or the challenging eight-mile climb past Llyn Cwm Llwch lake, where you can stop for a dip or a paddle. At the Red Kite Feeding Station (20 minutes) in Llanddeusant, visitors watch from a hide as dozens of birds of prey (not just red kites, but also buzzards and ravens) swoop down catching their lunch in mid-flight. It’s a pretty awesome (and noisy) sight. The Brecon Mountain Railway (35 minutes) is a heritage line that takes you on a five-mile journey from Pant (just north of Merthyr Tydfil), past the Pontsticill Reservoir, to Torpantau, in the Brecon Beacons. While you wait for the train, you can devour a scone (or some traditional Welsh bara brith bread) in the tea room at Pant station.
