  • Dog-friendly wild camping by a flower field in the Brecon Beacons
  • A 35-minute walk to Llangorse Lake; a 20-minute drive to Pen Y Fan
  • Three pubs within walking distance; a small river through the site
When you go wild camping at Emma’s Flower Fields, don’t forget to bring a blanket for nights of stargazing in the Brecon Beacons National Park. What other essentials might you need here? Your swimming costume, for sure, since the site is just 35 minutes’ walk from the lovely Llangorse Lake. A camera might come in handy too, given that the camping field is next to ‘Emma’s flower field’, awash with wild meadow, cottage garden, sunflowers and busy butterflies and honeybees. Sling a fishing net over your shoulder while you’re at it, and see what there is to find in the Afon Llynfi, a small river that runs through the site (after originating from the river Wye and first visiting areas west of the Black Mountains and some of the Brecon Beacons National Park). The stars are simply splendid at night due to unpolluted night skies, but before you get to stargazing, you might want to call by a local pub for bits like pie, chips or beer. There are two pubs in Llangorse village, 25 minutes’ walk away, and a further establishment in Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn, 25 minutes’ walk away too. If you hadn’t already heard, Llangorse is home to the largest natural lake in Mid Wales and South Wales. At only 35 minutes’ walk from the field, that means you won’t have long to wait to get to fishing, watersports and keeping your eyes peeled for Gorsey, the lake monster who’s rumoured to reside there. There are two horse trekking centres in Llangorse, along with an indoor climbing centre too, so it’s a good deal that there’s a café and a bar at the lake to replenish your energy afterwards. Please note that there is no drinking water or hot water on site.

Local attractions

Mountain hikes are really something special around here – you are in the Brecon Beacons National Park, after all. The closest summits are Mynydd Llangorse (10 minutes’ drive) and Allt yr Esgair (10 minutes), but those of you who want a challenge will find that Pen y Fan (20 minutes’ drive) is the highest peak of them all at 886 metres tall. Big on peaceful days browsing bookshops and sipping on coffee? The little town of Hay-on-Wye (20 minutes) is well-esteemed among book fans for its bookshops and coffee shops. You might want to captain a canoe once you’re done investigating those spots, as the river Wye runs through the town. In Brecon (15 minutes), the main waterway is the Brecon canal. Cruises depart from the Brecon Canal Basin (15 minutes). Just make sure to save some time to visit the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum and Brecon Cathedral, or tackle the Four Waterfalls walk in Ystradfellte (40 minutes).
