  • Peaceful dog-friendly site with views over Cardigan Bay
  • A 35-minute walk from New Quay; footpath to the Wales Coast Path
  • Shops and pubs in New Quay; playground and dog exercise area on site
Raring to go dolphin-spotting on the Wales Coast Path or fishing on a boat trip from New Quay? Very well – here’s Tyr Ffynnon Farm, an advantageous base for such coastal adventures. With 180-degree views over Cardigan Bay and a location just 35 minutes’ walk from New Quay, it would have been a shame to keep this quiet 38-acre working sheep farm for sheep only. Now, families and dogs (on leads) are welcome to come and relax at the elevated peninsular spot. There are plenty of walking areas away from the traffic – and just a couple of hundred metres from the entrance, there’s a public footpath where guests can join the Wales Coast Path. Spectacular views and the chance to spot dolphins… yes please. The coastal path passes through lively New Quay, where activities such as boat trips, sailing, fishing and watersports are on the agenda. Also called Cei Newydd, New Quay has a pretty harbour, sandy beaches and a sound selection of shops, pubs and restaurants for all your foodie desires. The pièce de resistance at Tyr Ffynnon Farm surely has to be the sublime sea-view sunsets that can be seen from the site. Other ace features include the modern shower and toilet facilities, which have hot electric showers, wash basins, toilets, electric hand dryers and electric sockets for hairdryers (in the ladies’ only) and a shaver point (in the gents’). Those with mini family members will also be pleased to find a playground and a fenced dog exercise area on site. Bonus points – the peaceful, friendly site is 20 minutes’ drive from Aberaeron, 35 minutes from Cardigan and 45 minutes from Aberystwyth.

Liked The views from the field are lovely. The facilities were great, always clean and I never had to wait or queue for the toilet or shower. More than happy to pay for showers, in fact, I think this was a great idea. Text before arrival was helpful with directions and payment before arrival was made as requested. The female site manager was very nice.

Disliked We were very disappointed by how we were treated during our stay by the owner. Not knowing that charging our electric vehicle wasn’t allowed, we briefly plugged it in near our pitch. Without any prior warning or explanation, a man—who we later discovered was the owner—arrived in a vehicle, climbed over the fence, and angrily unplugged our car charger, even pulling it quite forcefully from the car as if intending to take it away. At the time, we didn’t know who he was, so this sudden and aggressive behaviour was quite shocking.
My husband approached him politely to ask what the issue was and was told that charging electric vehicles is not permitted and that this was stated in the rules. We have since checked both the rule sheet we were given and the website, and there is no mention of EV charging restrictions. My husband apologised sincerely, but we were still told that we could be removed from the site. This encounter truly ruined what had otherwise been a pleasant stay.
We were respectful guests throughout: we kept noise to a minimum, followed recycling guidelines, and ensured we left facilities clean after use. It was never our intention to break any rules or cause offence. Had we simply been informed politely, we would have unplugged the car immediately without issue.
I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but the tone and manner in which we were approached were unnecessary and left us feeling very unwelcome. I would strongly suggest that the owner clearly updates the rules and website to include any EV charging policies, to prevent future misunderstandings with other guests. Would have been a solid 10/10 if the owner wasn’t so rude.

From the manager: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. However, we are saddened by some of your comments. The site owner is reknowned for being friendly and helpful to all of our guests and it is sad that you feel he was less than his usual self. Unfortunately, he discovered that you were charging your vehicle from our ehu point. There was no one in your tent at the time so he proceeded, quite rightly, to unplug the charging lead from our electricity supply. He then wound the lead up respectfully and placed it beside your car. Your husband then appeared from the next door tent and asked what he was doing! Owner explained that we do not permit charging of electric vehicles as we try to keep our ehu charges at a reasonable rate despite the enormous charges we have to pay for business rate electricity. He did state however, that you were welcome to stay as long as no further charging occurred. With all due respect, surely common sense tells, that when we receive just over £5 per night for electricity use, that more often than not does not cover the cost of customer use, we should not also have to bear the cost of fuelling your vehicle too! When customers using a diesel or petrol vehicle arrive they do not expect us to pay to fill their tanks! None the less thank you for staying with us and sorry we did not meet your expectations.

We stay here every year, never changes, brilliant camp site.

Liked Great campsite with amazing views. My daughter loved the park, and how close it was to our tent that she could go over whenever.

Facilities were always clean and nice to use as well.

Disliked Quite hard ground around our pitch which made it hard to hammer in pega

Local attractions

Days out in Aberaeron (20 minutes’ drive) – a regency town with a Georgian harbour and multi-coloured houses – could be spent taking yet more coastal walks, tucking into tapas and scallops around the harbour or licking a honey-flavoured ice cream by the sea. Strolls or fishing along the river Teifi might make it onto your itinerary in Cardigan (35 minutes). The town’s castle is on the riverside and has its own escape room. Another historical spot is in St Dogmaels (40 minutes), where there are abbey ruins with medieval roots. Aberystwyth (45 minutes) is much more than a university town. It’s also home to the National Library of Wales, a free museum and heaps of interesting shops. Elsewhere along the coast, Penbryn beach (25 minutes) is accessed through woodlands from the Wales Coast Path. A short detour from here will get you to Tresaith Waterfall (25 minutes).
