Bell tent (basic)

Liked: The campsite was lovely and quiet, 2 camping fields with just a handful of campers. It was clean and tidy, pitches seem to be well spaced out. Showers and toilets were clean, showers were lovely and hot! Plenty of bins around the site, recycling encouraged...wash up areas and access to water no problem at all. Also a little cooking area with a gas stove and some pots and pans if needed! We usually take our own tent but for such a short break we opted for a basic unfurnished bell tent which turned out to be a great option! It included the tent, a firepit and a cooking stand for over the fire, we had a great time! The views are beautiful, lots of Red Kites flying around, plus owls at night. Dark skies too so star gazing was fabulous! Mobile signal was good....It's really easy to get to and the local town has a couple of supermarkets and some lovely little shops - about 5 minutes drive away if that. The owners are a lovely couple who genuinely couldn't do more for you, they were an absolute pleasure and so thoughtful.

Bell tent

Liked: Bell tent was set up with everything you need. Also a shared kitchen so you could get away without bringing any extra bits is you needed to. Owner was very friendly and there were plenty of fields to explore close by. Bathrooms were really good and painted rocks were a very nice touch too

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Quiet site with plenty of fields around and countryside to walk the dog. Big pitches with toilets and a shower block. Owner was friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Entrance and exit is tight and narrow and we had to shunt the caravan back a couple of times to get out without hitting the bank on the way out.

Local attractions

First stop may well be a day at the coast. Gather everybody up and head for New Quay (half an hour’s drive) with its cute fishing harbour and pocket-sized beach, or choose Aberaeron (25 minutes) to admire its brightly coloured houses and go swimming or sailing. At Aberystwyth (45 minutes) you can take a ride on the cliff railway for wondrous views over Cardigan Bay. At each of these ports of call, there are cafés and restaurants for revitalising after splashing around on the beach. Carmarthen (40 minutes) is a lovely spot to spend the day, with the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheatre, indoor artisan markets and lots of art galleries as well as indie boutiques selling jewellery and crafts. If you have time, take a detour to the Carmarthenshire County Museum in nearby Abergwili (40 minutes) to learn about local Arthurian legends. If you’d like to buy some Welsh souvenirs, plan a visit to In The Welsh Wind Distillery (35 minutes) to pick up some gin, or take home some local honey, beeswax and seeds from Gwenyn Gruffydd honey farm (45 minutes).
