  • Back to basics pop-up site at a Ceredigion working farm
  • Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge Falls both 15 minutes' drive away
  • Dog-friendly site with peaceful pitches close to the Rheidol river
Grab yourselves a gorgeous corner of Ceredigion countryside at Garthheulog Campsite, a pop-up site on a working farm about 15 minutes’ drive inland from Aberystwyth. If you’re making your way to this part of Mid Wales to soak up some of the stunning scenery, well, you should be pretty pleased with this spot – it’s surrounded by lovely views of the surrounding hills and farmland, giving you a patchwork of different shades of green as the backdrop to your break. That gives you something of a taster of what to expect when you head out to explore more thoroughly too – Garthheulog is in a great location for lots of rural walks and bike rides including the trails to Devil’s Bridge Falls and those running through Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest – both are about 15 minutes’ drive away. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on site, so your family furball will be able to join you on your jaunts too. Getting out on two feet or two wheels isn’t the only way to fill a day here – there are plenty of things to see and do in Aberystwyth (including a beach and the excellent Vale of Rheidol Railway) and the Magic of Life Butterfly House is about a mile and a half away. Back at base, it’s a simple setup with plenty of space but no toilets or showers, so you’ll need to be fully self contained with everything you need for your stay.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Lovely reception from Kath. It’s was quiet. Outside facilities available for emptying toilets and rubbish which was clean and tidy.

Disliked: On a slight slope but didn’t affect us much. No signal here so perfect if you are looking for off grid, but difficult to find things without signal.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: A very peaceful site in the Rheidol Valley with lovely views of the valley which is very well kept by the owners Robert and Kath. An ideal location for exploring the Rheidol Valley, with it's mining history and the hydroelectric power station. Robert greeted us on arrival and guided us to our pitch, to enjoy our stay. A good base for cycling and walking this beautiful area.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Friendly welcome from the owner who opened the gates and showed me to the site, we (me and the dog) were the only ones staying on the night so he said to park where I wanted. It is a basic site, but there is nothing wrong with the facilities that are provided, the bins were empty and clean as was the chemical dump, although the pitch is steep in places its plenty big enough for the number of spaces they advertise. My 3.5t motorhome didn't have any issues even though it had been raining when we left. There is a slight slope to the gate but nothing major. It doesn't pretend to be anything its not and that is reflected in the price. As I've said in the dislikes, its not a level site, but it didn't bother me and wouldn't put me off staying there again. I've only made the comment to advise people who might stay there expecting a level site, however the views out over the fields are worth the slope. I will certainly stay there again if I am in the area.

Disliked: If you are picky about being level then this isn't the site for you, it didn't bother me but if you have to be absolutely level then consider somewhere else. If you are not experienced with a larger motorhome and if the weather is wet you might want to avoid the site, due to the slope. Its clear that its free draining, but in wet weather if you don't know how to handle your motorhome on grass then you might cause yourself problems and bog down.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Good location with easy access from the A44 and not too far from Aberystwyth. Very quiet location with wonderful views. Located at Ty Cam Farm if using navigation. Decent phone and TV signal.

Disliked: Rather hard to park level even with ramps as the site is sloping and easy to get wheel spin on the grass if wet due to the gradient. But I would still use the site again.

Local attractions

Aberystwyth (15 minutes’ drive) is a good place for a day out, exploring the castle, riding the cliff railway and wandering along the pier before taking a paddle at the beach. You can also board the Vale of Rheidol Railway here for a steam-powered trip to Devil’s Bridge Falls (which you can also drive to in about 15 minutes if you prefer). Elsewhere along the coast you may like to head north to Borth (20 minutes) to see if you can spot the buried petrified forest (only visible at low tide) or south to New Quay (50 minutes) for a dolphin-spotting boat trip. Closer to home, there’s wildlife of differing sizes to see at the Magic of Life Butterfly House (five minutes) and the red kit feeding station at Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre (15 minutes), which also has some lovely walking and bike trails. If you’d rather explore the scenery on horseback, head to Rheidol Riding Centre (10 minutes) for lessons, hacks and day rides.
