  • Family-friendly caravan park five minutes’ drive from Aberystwyth
  • Magic of Life Butterfly House 20 minutes’ drive; Eryri an hour
  • Dogs welcome; play area; indoor pool; evening entertainment
For a Welsh break with convenient access to Cardigan Bay, head to Mid Wales Caravan Holidays at Aberystwyth Holiday Village, on the outskirts of Aberystwyth (and about an hour from Eryri National Park and its hiking and climbing trails). The nearest beach – Tan-y-Bwlch, which is part pebbles and part sand – is a 15-minute walk away (or a five-minute drive, and there is plenty of room for parking). If you’re after a coastal stretch with facilities such as deckchair hire, toilets, café and donkey rides, head into Aberystwyth proper (five minutes’ drive), and either South Beach or North Beach. A one-hour hike along the Ceredigion Coast Path (or a 15-minute drive) takes you to Clarach Bay, sheltered by a headland and with rockpools to explore. As well as well-maintained caravans, the site has a launderette and recycling facilities. Being a family-owned business, Mid Wales Caravan Holidays really nails what might appeal to a family, with a playground and an indoor pool to prevent the kids from getting restless, plus a bar and evening entertainment for the grown-ups. Four-legged members of the family are welcome too, and there are plenty of dog-friendly walks around (including Tan-y-Bwlch). Self-caterers stock up on essentials at the supermarket in Parc y Llyn Retail Park (five minutes) or in Aberystwyth town, where there are also restaurants serving authentic Welsh rarebit, modern British fare and assorted global dishes.

Local attractions

In Aberystwyth (five minutes’ drive), catch the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway to the top of Constitution Hill, which has a miniature golf course, a games room and a camera obscura. After climbing back down into town, visit the 13th-century ruins of Castell Aberystwyth, on a headland with a War Memorial topped by a winged Victory statue. At the Magic of Life Butterfly House (20 minutes), you can walk around an indoor tropical house inhabited by colourful free-flying butterflies, who seem unfazed by humans and will happily settle on your shoulders and hands. Other residents include stick insects, beetles and caterpillars. Occupying a former mine, the Silver Mountain Experience (25 minutes) combines settings full of original 19th-century equipment and machinery with child-friendly activities, including gem panning and fossil digging, plus an adventure playground. There are also organised events, such as creepy ghost hunts.
