  • Luxury glamping pods on the NC500 route at Latheronwheel in Caithness
  • The Whaligoe Steps 15 minutes’ drive and Dunrobin Castle 50 minutes
  • Wooden pods with fully fitted kitchens and spectacular Highland views
The North Coast 500 is one of the UK’s most spectacular driving/hiking/cycling routes, so it stands to reason that you should be looking for somewhere equally spectacular to lay your head at night. Craiglea Lodge should be right up there on your short list, as it has luxury wooden glamping pods with stunning views of the Moray Firth. Set on a hillside just outside Latheronwheel in Caithness, they sleep up to six guests and provide very welcome comfort and luxury after a day’s drive/walk/bike ride. Each pod is kitted out with modern, fully fitted kitchens with a microwave, dishwasher and everything you need utensils-wise provided, plus a cosy living space that easily fits in a dining table and sofa (which converts into a large double bed if needed). There are two double bedrooms (all linens, towels and toiletries supplied) with ample hanging space and storage, as well as an ensuite family-sized bathroom and a smaller bathroom, both with powerful showers. And so you don’t have to faff around finding stuff on arrival, a welcome pack of coffee, tea and biscuits awaits in the kitchen. Despite the quiet, rural setting of this site, there are shops, pubs and restaurants in Seahouses, as well as restaurants and cafés five minutes’ drive away in gorgeous Bamburgh. Locally, there are several of the UK’s most spectacular beaches, happily dog-friendly all year round – but you don’t have to go that far to exercise your canine chums, as there’s a dedicated dog-walking area on site.

Local attractions

It may be difficult to tear yourself away from your luxury retreat, but there is much to be seen in this historic corner of Caithness. Start with Latheronwheel, where you can discover tiny pixie houses in the Fairy Glen (five minutes’ walk) and admire dramatic rock stacks from the once-busy harbour (20 minutes). If you’re brave enough, the Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes’ drive) require you to scramble down a steep flight of stone steps to a former herring-fishing harbour – but don’t forget you’ll have to stagger all the way back up again You might like to try your hand at gold panning at Kildonan Burn (40 minutes), where the short-lived Great Sutherland Gold Rush kicked off in 1868. In contrast to fishing and searching for gold, whisky production is still very much thriving in Caithness, and you can sample (and buy) single malts on a visit to Old Pulteney Distillery (25 minutes). If you’d care to see how the Scottish gentry lived in times past, Dunrobin Castle (50 minutes) is your best bet. This fairytale property is open for self-guided tours of its opulent state rooms and exquisite formal gardens. There are also several abandoned castle ruins to admire along the East Caithness coastline, including Berriedale (15 minutes) and Castle Sinclair Girnigoe (35 minutes).
