Liked: They have a tavern, liked the rabbits on the field. They gave us food 3 minutes before the kitchen closed, huge thank you for that!

Disliked: Bathroom/toilets near the tent side didnt work so we had to walk to the caravan site toilets

Primitive grass trailer tent campsite

Liked: Although clearly a busy holiday park, in mid September it was very tranquil. Although we had originally been placed in an empty and rather bleak camping field, the staff were very helpful and found a hard pitched placement for this one night stop. Great fish and chip takeaway from the restaurant.

Disliked: no dogs inside but takeaway good.

Primitive grass tent campsite (solo)

Liked: Good and quiet camping. Facilities weren't open in the campsite this time so a bit of a walk to the nearest toilets (but I was staying out of the main season) but was a really nice facility block available in the caravan area to use.

Primitive grass tent campsite (two person)

Liked: All staff very friendly and helpful. Location and facilities really good-reception/shop, restaurant, take away food vans and weekend entertainment. All facilities clean. Great value for money.

Disliked: Minor criticism-some lighting in camping area would be useful (including safety reasons)and toilets in the camping area not open as advertised but this was possibly temporary following a music festival weekend.

Primitive grass tent campsite (two person)

Liked: The reception staff were friendly on arrival. Site was way beyond my expectations. The Tavern and Tent were beautiful and the cocktails were amazing!!! A welcome bonas. We ate at the food truck, food was really good and very reasonably priced. The only reason I dropped a star as on a Sunday you really need a reservation to eat which I didn't know and the food truck was closed. We had to go.off Park.and try to find somewhere to eat. Would have been a perfect stay if we could have eaten on park. However, lesson learnt and we will know for next time

Disliked: Having to press shower after 10 seconds. Food truck closed on Sunday when restaurant was fully booked

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked: Toilet block was okay Shower block was okay Restaurant was nice Drinks were good priced

Disliked: Would not recommend staying in a tent here for people with young children as stayers were partying until 3am shouting, slamming van doors, screaming, singing and playing music and we got no sleep. Kids were playing football, cricket and flying kites next to people's vehicles. Drunk people were cutting through by our tent and fell over our tent lines and pulled them out when we were in it. Constant shouting and no consideration for other people. We will definitely not stay at this campsite again. Says on leaflet what is given at reception that it's quiet from 11pm until 7am, but no monitoring at all.

Primitive grass tent campsite (two person)

Liked: Friendly greeter for our late check-in who provided us with clear information about where to picture up and what the rules for the campsite were. The facilities were clearly marked for campers and there was guided lighting back to the camping area from the restaurant.

Local attractions

Think of Scotland and you likely think of (among other things) castles, whiskey and golf. The latter is nicely provided on site, but there can never be too much of a good thing... Perfect that swing on a handful of courses within easy reach, including one in the village of St Boswells, 10 minutes’ drive from the site. This part of the country should also satisfy even the most ardent castle fans too (as long as they remember to check opening dates): the 16th-century Ferniehirst is 15 minutes away; Scotland’s largest inhabited Castle, Floors, is 25 minutes from base; and the former love nest of Mary Queen of Scots and the fourth Earl of Bothwell, Hermitage Castle, is reachable in less than an hour. Those keen to stay in the past should have a poke around the ruins of Melrose and Jedburgh abbeys, both within 20 minutes, or stick to statelier affairs at Abbotsford and Monteviot within the same radius. Active types might prefer to opt for wanders around Harestanes (10 minutes) or swing through the trees at Go Ape Peebles and pedal down precipitous slopes at the 7stanes trails at Glentress, both 50 minutes away. Gin quaffers will want to pour themselves over to the Born in the Borders visitor centre 25 minutes from base but, when it comes to the uisge beatha (that’s the water of life, or whiskey for all the non-Gaelic speakers), a trip to Edinburgh comes highly recommended for tours of the whiskey museum (plus more museums, castles and shops, of course).
