  • Nearly-wild camping field in West Lothian with views of the Pentlands
  • A 20-minute drive from the Forth Bridge; Edinburgh half an hour
  • On a working farm, with views over Arthur's Seat and Binnie Craig
Law Farm Campsite is a small-scale pop-up site in West Lothian. Set on a working farm and surrounded by spectacular rural scenery, it's a laidback place to take a break close to the Pentland Hills, Edinburgh's historic city centre and the UNESCO-listed Forth Bridge. This farm field is very grassy and spacious, so there's plenty of room between plots. The site has simple facilities like portable toilets, meaning that this is a place best suited to self-sustaining travellers who appreciate the chance to build a campfire or cook their own dinner over a barbecue. The views over hills including Arthur's Seat, Binnie Craig, Cairnpapple Hill and Cockleroy more than make up for the absence of mod cons. Law Farm Campsite is very family-friendly, and the kids may well like being able to see livestock in neighbouring fields. Well-behaved dogs on leads are also welcome to come along and join in on the action. The site is about a mile and a half from the small village of Dechmont where you can catch direct buses to Edinburgh (journeys typically take roughly 45 minutes). You are also a 10-minute drive from Broxburn, where there are supermarkets, shops, cafés and a post office.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The host was amazing so friendly and accommodating. The children got to feed the animals. We had forgotten one of our air beds and the host brought us extra covers to lay on. Views are amazing. We had a great experience for our first time camping as a family. Would deo go back for the night.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: My son and I had a great stay at Law Farm last night. As soon as we arrived, Carolyn came over and introduced herself, and made us feel very welcome. The whole feel of the site was friendly and relaxed. My agriculture-mad son was fascinated by the farm workings going on around us, and he was allowed to feed the lambs and calves in the morning. Lots of other animals to see, including hens, ducks, goats and a (rather noisy!) donkey. There's plenty of space in the field to pitch where you like. It's on a slight slope, but not too severe and there are flatter sections if you choose carefully. It's quite an exposed site, so if it's windy (which is was for us) peg your tent down well! The flip slide of this is that there's a great view of the bridges, The Forth, Arthurs Seat, The Pentlands and Greendykes Bing. There's a portaloo at either end of the field which were serviceable and smell-free. Great site for dogs, and my pooch made lots of friends. The eggs for sale are delicious. I hope we will be back next year.
