  • Peaceful site on an Arabian horse stud farm and smallholding
  • On the Black Isle peninsula, with direct access to Millbuie Forest
  • A five-minute drive from Culbokie and 25 minutes from Inverness
Enthusiastic about all things equestrian? Then escape to Black Isle Stud, a small site on a horse farm with a handful of pitches. It’s on the north side of the Black Isle peninsula, a section of Scotland’s Highlands flanked by the firths of Cromarty, Moray, Inverness and Beauly. This is a small site with no fancy facilities located off a track – most guests appreciate the peace and quiet here. Outstanding views over to the local munro, Ben Wyvis, mean it’s a sublime spot for a scenic stay within easy reach of Inverness (25 minutes). And it’s not just views and horses to be seen here – buzzards, red kites and ospreys regularly soar through the skies above. The land is shared with hares and the occasional roe deer too, and If you’re an early bird you might get a glimpse of red squirrels and pine martens. This site is sublime for those seeking seclusion – the owners reckon they rarely see another soul while strolling or cycling through Millbuie Forest, a leafy area accessible directly from the grounds. You might spot other humans while gathering grub in Culbokie (a five-minute drive), but if you really don’t fancy straying far from the site, ask the staff to collect fresh rolls for you from the shop or takeaway meals from the village pub. Suddenly got the urge to get moving? Sign up to one of the park’s tai chi and qigong classes or go on a guided walk.

Local attractions

Mountain biking, sailing, golf, tennis, walking and horse riding are just a few of the activities to take part in while on the brilliant Black Isle peninsula. Making forays to a family fave, the beach at Rosemarkie (20 minutes’ drive) – a sandy area with rock pools, safe swimming waters, a play park and a popular café – is another top way to spend a day. Wander 20 minutes from here to Fortrose to gaze at the cathedral and chapter house before ambling along the golf course down to Chanonry Point for a bit of dolphin spotting. Want to watch wildlife while out on the water? Climb on board a boat at the tip of the Black Isle – tours around a few of the firths leave from Cromarty (25 minutes). Walk the historic streets and admire the architecture afterwards, then visit the courthouse to learn more about the village’s past. Just before heading home, swing by the Dutch cheese shop and bakery to splash out on treats for later on.
