Want a woodland stay? Go the whole Highlands hog and hole up in a log cabin crafted from the native trees among which it dwells. Your friendly hosts at Invernesshire site Caledonian Glamping have designed and built their wooden hut using locally-sourced Douglas fir, larch and a turf roof, helping the comfy and eco-friendly ensuite lodge blend with its scenic surrounds. And what surrounds they are: the immediate view is of a pretty wildflower meadow, with Caledonian pine trees behind and gorgeous Glen Affric nature reserve a five-minute drive down the road. Beyond that, well, you’ve got a whole heap of Highlands treats ahead, including walks through Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar and lakeside ambles by Loch Ness. Fishing, climbing, horse riding, bike rides and kayaking can all be on the schedule for folks seeking a bit more alfresco action. It’s likely you’ll have had a bit of a journey to get here (such is the way with proper rural retreats…) so you’ll no doubt be chuffed to note that a welcome tray of tea and coffee will greet your arrival. Eats and drinks after that are up to you: a couple of minutes’ saunter gets you to the village of Cannich for pub meals or to pick up supplies for cooking back at base. The hut’s been kitted out with a well-equipped mini kitchen, or if the sun gods are smiling you may choose a fresh-air feast at the barbecue/campfire area.

Liked: We loved everything here. Good sized, clean microloge with everything you need. Great space outside: decking and fire pit area. Lovely owners, very helpful but respecting your privacy. The best ever SPAR shop/bar ;) Nice little village, great views and walks. Near to Loch Ness, Abriachan Forest, Inverness :) We had a fantastic stay :)

Local attractions

Grab your binoculars before you set out on the five-minute drive to Glen Affric nature reserve: this rare ancient pine forest is home to all sorts of beasts, including red deer, otters, red squirrels and the odd golden eagle. If your legs long for more once you’ve taken a gentle stroll around here, take your boots or bikes out on to the 44-mile Affric Kintail Way, which passes by the site's entrance on its way from Loch Ness to Loch Duich. Keep the active times coming with canoe trips from Cabrich (half an hour’s drive), a round at Aigas Golf (20 minutes), saddling up for a day on horseback (20 minutes) or clambering up a few of the local munroes. If you need a hand, the site owners can point you towards places to organise bike hire, hook up with hiking guides or find fishing outings. Make sure to leave time for Loch Ness, too – Drumnadrochit, 20 minutes away on the lake’s shore, is a fine place for a boat cruise and a wander around Urquhart Castle, and you can take in waterfall walks at Divach Falls (25 minutes) and Invermoriston (40 minutes).
