  • Family-friendly site in with direct access to a private beach
  • A quarter of an hour to Kirkcudbright or Newton Stewart by car
  • Direct access to the South West Coastal 300 route
Folk come to the coast of Dumfries and Galloway for the peace and quiet, the castles and – if you opt for this particular spot just off the A75 – for access to a private sandy beach. Newton Campsite is a family-friendly site in a rural location with direct access to Scotland's southern seascapes and the scenic South West Coastal 300 driving route, all in a convenient location 15 minutes' drive from the popular towns of Kirkcudbright and Newton Stewart. The site is surrounded by fields and the pitches are just a short walk from the beach, where you can relax over a picnic or bring a kayak, bodyboard or wee sailboat and make your own oceangoing adventures. In the evening, head back to base to build a small fire in the designated spots, or bring your own firepit and spend the night enjoying sizzling snacks and gazing up at the stars. Newton Campsite has basic facilities only, including a waste-disposal point for toilet waste and a tap for fresh drinking water. Because of this, you'll need to bring your own toilet facilities (and all guests staying in tents are asked to bring their own toilet tent). The nearest set of shops is about four miles away, while Newton Stewart is where to head for bigger supermarkets and restaurants.

Primitive grass and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked: Only a few feet from a gorgeous beach. Watched magical sunrises, as well as being a clear sky area, fantastic for star gazing.

Disliked: The lack of clearly defined, allocated space led to random parking that felt intrusive. Owner allows large groups which was noisy.

Primitive grass and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked: Well what can l say, in regards to this real fabulous place. Must of spent our 2 week stay on one of the best caravan pitches. We were literally right on the beach within 3 metres of the waves. Our two dogs loved every minute like we did.

A couple of the days the weather had turned/nasty, but that is to be expected in mid October. The owners were nice when we spoke to them and one of them told us of plans to put in electricity points in so it was not off grid which it is at the moment. The nearest local shop is the spar situated in Gatehouse of Fleet which is around 10 minutes drive from the campsite.

The nearest petrol station is at Creetown which is a left turn out of the campsites and 8 to 9 miles up the road and at 1.29p per litre and a little premier stores 500 yards from the petrol station also. If you follow the A75 for another 5 miles you will come to a small sainsbury and Large Lidl

Creetown has a memorial to the soldiers of the 1st World War who lived in the area. We will must definitely be returning but maybe this time in the better weather.

A wonder place to have a break from it all.

Miss that place now l am home again.

Disliked: Nothing to Dislike. How can you Dislike Mother Nature.

Local attractions

In the immediate vicinity, you could explore mysterious ancient history at Cairn Holy (five minutes' drive), a set of Neolithic chambered tombs. If you're minded to range far and wide you might also like a spin around the 7Stanes bike park in Dalbeattie (30 minutes). One of the closest castles is at Cardoness (five minutes) in a hilltop location where you can take in far-reaching views, while down by the coast Carsluith Castle (10 minutes) is very well preserved and free to enter. More history and heritage is showcased in Kirkcudbright (15 minutes; pronounced kirk-oo-bree), including Broughton House, a restored Georgian mansion. The town also has a swimming pool for those months when the sea's a bit too chilly for a dip. Newton Campsite is also within easy reach of pretty coastal peninsulas like Isle of Whithorn (40 minutes), a pretty coastal village long associated with St Ninian, who brought Christianity to Scotland. The Rhins of Galloway peninsula (45 minutes) is also well worth a visit if you fancy visiting green spaces like Logan Botanic Garden (an hour) or the southernmost point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (an hour and 10 minutes).
