  • Off-grid dark sky camping on the edge of Galloway Forest Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Kenmure Castle; Dumfries 40 minutes
  • River walks, fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding available
Set on the edge of the gorgeous Galloway Forest Park and with access to two lochs, Hensol Estate Holidays is a wildlife haven in southern Scotland with ample opportunities for relaxed or active breaks. The estate has a number of scenic on-site river walks, some of which can take you to a pair of RSPB bird hides overlooking a nature reserve and platforms where you can scan the horizon for geese and kites. Fishing enthusiasts, meanwhile, can cast their lines into Woodhall Loch. For active times, there are opportunities to get kayaking and paddleboarding either there or in nearby Loch Ken (subject to availability; extra charges apply to these outdoor activities). While staying on the estate is a similar experience to wild camping, you'll have access to basic amenities like toilets and showers. You'll also be within a mile of a small but well-stocked village shop in Mossdale. It's also easy to get out to family-friendly attractions like Kenmure Castle (10 minutes' drive) or to larger local towns like Castle Douglas (20 minutes) where there are supermarkets, restaurants and pubs aplenty.

Star Gazer camping pod (no pets, six person)

Liked: Absolutely fantastic place, superb stargazing pod - super clean and tidy. Star lights - great touch! Everything so easy to understand and clear. Nice that we were offered some logs for the fire too. The stars and night sky were just perfect. What a small price to pay for such a perfecto night. Thank you!

Powered grass and gravel campsite

Liked: The estate is lovely and plenty of places to explore. The toilets and showers are closed by and clean.

Disliked: The pitches are wide which was great but narrow from the caravans opposite. No mobile coverage which I actually loved but could be an issue for other visitors

Liked: Facilities all clean and of good standard. Staff contactable by phone. Site liable to be invaded by sheep/cattle. Some people would have found this worrying.

Disliked: Terrible lack of signage on local roads. We arrived at 6:30 and only found the site by getting out of the car and looking at a small A board by torchlight. The sign was in black and brown and unreadable in the dark. No lighting until you got up to the toilet blocks, when lights came on remotely. In the morning it was frosty and the decking around the facilities was dangerously slippery. This site would be fine in the summer but is not suitable year round. Left two days early.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The beautiful surroundings and laid back atmosphere. We had the site pretty much to ourselves. Loved the flexibility to choose your pitch, the fire pits were great. Facilities were no problem- one toilet block older than the other but had everything we needed for our weekend stay. We had a fantastic walk along the river too. Brilliant weekend. Stars at night were spectacular!! We absolutely loved it and will hopefully be back again!

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Loved everything. We loved the peace, freedom, space and welcoming hosts. No bossy, condescending signs around the place 👍🏼 We loved that you were left alone to enjoy the peace, space and campfire. The stargazing around the campfire at night was incredible. So comfortable here we had found our happy place. Great facilities everything you need for your camping trip.

Local attractions

The local area has lots of attractions to keep the whole family engaged, from Kenmure Castle (10 minutes' drive), a derelict fortified manor house, to Ernespie Farm (20 minutes), a kid-oriented adventure park in a relaxed rural setting. For rainy-day activities with younger kids, try The Cocoabean Company (20 minutes), where chocolate workshops and soft play are on offer, or head for a sweet treat at Cream o'Galloway ice cream, a much-loved local brand (30 minutes). If you find that the kids are running a tad high on energy after either of the latter, take them to run around or fly a kite on the sandy beaches of Scotland's west coast (from 25 minutes), or take them out on bike rides in Galloway Forest Park to beauty spots like Otters Pool (20 minutes). More outings are on offer at Gatehouse of Fleet (25 minutes), a historic village in a designated national scenic area with river views and a well-preserved 18th-century cotton mill. Dumfries' town centre (40 minutes) also has a historic riverside quarter and the Robert Burns Trail to explore, while visits to Scotland's most southerly point, the Rhins of Galloway, are also possible if you don't mind the hour-long drive.
