  • Small Ayrshire camping and tourer site with Ailsa Craig views
  • Turnberry Beach and Trump Turnberry golf course five minutes’ walk
  • Family-friendly with an all-day tearoom, picnic tables and a play park
Whether you’re passing through on the way up north or down south, or hanging out in Ayrshire to explore the area’s many attractions, Balkenna Caravan Park is a handy little biker, camping and tourer site with easy access directly off the A77 (please note there may be some traffic noise). Welcoming dogs and kids, this low-key spot has a small play park safely fenced off for the latter, while Turnberry Beach is right across the road for families and their canine companions to stretch their legs. And the park has three more USPs up its metaphorical sleeve. First is the on-site Balkenna Tearoom, where you can grab a constant supply of hot drinks, breakfasts, snacks, main meals, vegetarian dishes, desserts and ice cream throughout the day. Secondly, the views out over the Firth of Clyde to the rocky bluff of Ailsa Craig are truly spectacular, and you get to see them from all over the pitches – and finally, the Trump Turnberry is five minutes’ walk away, a bucket-list attraction for any golfers among you. Some practical stuff too: there’s drinking water on site, as well as a chemical toilet disposal point and hot showers.

Liked: The staff were very friendly and helpful. I loved the view from my pitch (18). It’s a lovely spot for enjoying the sunset over the sea with Ailsa Craig on the horizon. The toilets and showers were clean. The pitch was nice and flat. This site sits on a busy road so if traffic noise bothers you, it’s probably not for you. I don’t mind it. It was the cows mooing that took a bit for me to get used to. 😂

Disliked: There was a bit of litter scattered around and I found dog poop on my pitch when I was setting up my tent.

Liked: Used as a stop over. Small friendly feel with excellent customer service. Basic facilities but more than acceptable. The cafe business attached to site for other commuters made the stay very convenient.

Disliked: As a stop over there is nothing to dislike.

Liked: Nice clean facilities. I was arriving after closing times, so received an SMS from the owner with all the information I would need. Campsite is part of a tea room which opens at 08:00 and does cooked breakfasts. Very clean well kept site, I'll definitely be back. Cows in the field behind are nice and friendly. Beautiful sunset location.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Liked: We have to give one star or the review cannot be submitted. The girl who met us was very polite, no one to show us around as this site comprises of two small fields. We needed to look up the details of this site before we could send in the review as we thought we missed something. We would not recommend this site to anyone. You have a view of Ailsa Craig. You cannot walk into Turnberry as there is no footpath for half a mile and this is the main road to the ferry port at Cairnryan. We have stayed in campsites in England, Ireland, Spain and France and this has to be the worst site that we have ever used.

Disliked: We felt very unsafe. There is no security, no barrier at the entrance. Anyone could drive in during the night. The toilets and showers are in a converted shed. The Wifi doesn't work and once the tea room closed there was no one to help. At 7pm we received an email from Wal to ask if we were on the way. We had checked in at 5pm. We were asked for cash but the nice girl took our credit card as she checked with someone in the back of the building. We would not recommend - not suitable for small children as the main road is very close. The entrance to our site was tight and not easy to spot cars entering the carpark of the tearooms, The site needs some lighting as completely pitch dark at night, Our small field had 8 pitches but would provide little room to manoeuvre a campervan if all pitches were occupied. Could not find refuse bins other than those used by the tearooms.

Local attractions

The whole family will enjoy the proximity of sandy Turnberry Beach (five minutes’ walk) for strolls along the dunes or a section of the Ayrshire Coastal Path, all backed by views out to Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde. Take a boat trip from Girvan (10 minutes’ drive) to this dumpy, rocky islet to see the puffin and gannet colonies on its cliffs. Back on dry land, Culzean Castle and Country Park (15 minutes) sits on cliffs high above the Firth of Clyde; tour opulent rooms packed with priceless antiques and have a stroll around the formal gardens. Any culture vultures among you can also visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (20 minutes) to learn more about Scotland’s favourite bard in his childhood home; displays include original manuscripts and period furnishing. If it’s time to treat the kids, Heads of Ayr Farm Park (25 minutes) has cuddly sheep, llamas, ponies and donkeys to keep them smiling, as well as mini-train and go-kart rides. Galloway Forest Park (half an hour) is the spot for woodland walks and games of hide and seek, and when younger kids need a bit of downtime, you can all chuff through wooded hills on the Doon Valley Railway (35 minutes).
