  • Wildlife haven and woodland park with fishing loch on site
  • Within easy driving distance of beaches and Cairngorms National Park
  • Well-equipped playground on site; dog-friendly site
Angling for some Angus fishing? Pitch up at glorious Glenesk Holiday Park and cast off at its loch in the middle (home to tench and roach) – then pack your rod for salmon and trout fishing on the nearby River North Esk. Not angling for Angus fishing? Leave the fisherfolk to it and settle down to species spotting from the loch shore, wander around the unspoilt woodland of this wildlife haven park or tackle the many excellent hill hikes within walking distance. Sandy beaches, city shopping, the Cairngorms National Park and the Scottish Whisky Trail are all within driving distance. When it’s sunny, the well-equipped park playground should keep the kids occupied while you get on with the serious business of fishing/lying by the loch spotting red squirrels. Park amenities include two heated toilet blocks, free hot showers and a covered dishwashing area. Another plus of staying here? You can bring dogs and awnings free of charge.

Local attractions

Several walks and hills are within easy walking distance; lace up your boots and walk forth, or ask Glenesk Holiday Park for recommendations for walks, activities and attractions nearby and around the area. Glenesk has hill walks for all abilities from the faint-hearted to the confidently striding and all sorts in between. The Hill of Rowan walk from the Tarfside car park should make a peaceful compromise as it’s a doable four and a half miles long, and easy to navigate given that the huge memorial of the top of the Hill of Rowan can be seen for miles around. Make some time for a stroll to Edzell too, lined with 19th-century buildings and called the ‘jewel of the glens’ for its prettiness – in this part of Scotland, that’s quite a moniker… The start of the main street is marked by Dalhousie Arch: pass under here to browse shops, antique establishments, cafés, tearooms and restaurants. Castles, historic houses and gardens abound in Angus and neighbouring Aberdeenshire, with most open to the public from Easter onwards. Glamis Castle, setting of the Scottish play, has guided tours, exhibitions and an Italian garden, and the Queen’s pad Balmoral is an enviable look at the lives of the royals and part of the Aberdeenshire castle trail (of which there are a mighty 17).

Camping pod (five person)

Liked: Staff are amazing and so helpful, respectful also. Like home from home. Everybody there treats all people like family. Food is amazing at the cafe, all fresh, cooked to order. We had glenesk breakfast and bacon waffles all week.

Disliked: This is nothing against the staff or the site.... Some visitors take things from the pods when leaving like heaters, mattresses, extension leads and remotes. This isnt fare on the site staff and owners as they then have to replace these straight away. When people use the pods they should be mindful and respectful of other peoples property as that is their lively hood. We will be back to visit at some point (less stuff maybe). X

Primitive gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: You were able to park facing a lovely lake and watch the ducks come and go. There was also the opportunity to do some fishing if required but had to return caught fish to the lake

Disliked: You never saw the owners whilst staying there. Toilets and showers were rather run down

From the manager: we are closing the toilet block tomorrow, permanently to satisfy all the people who complain about it , so wont offer that facility any more , a shame for the thousands who have enjoyed the beautiful setting and acccept the slightly dated facilities . a shame ,

Camping pod (five person)

Liked: Beautiful and calm place. The cabin was warm even without heating. The manager is friendly, when you get in tach with him. Our children were happy to fish in their pond. Yes, and there was always hot water in the taps! Wi-Fi is weak, but this can be either bad or good.

Disliked: I'm glad we arrived around 15:00. The office was closed, but the worker from the cafe explained to us where to find our cabin and how to check in. The manager does not work on site every day.

Primitive gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Beautiful surroundings and easy access to many walks locally.

Disliked: No-one on-site for my whole stay . This was the first trip I had made in my caravan so would have been nice to speak to someone for advice etc. it was the guy in the cafe who told me where I could park up .Unable to get Wi-Fi code.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: there is always staff on site, the cafe owner is a senior member of staff and perfectly qualified to check people in, also my number always in window and always staff on site ,whether sales, grass cutting or warden . also we are not here to babysit or give advice for 25 per night, its a campsite for grown ups

Primitive gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Only stayed one night but wish we had stayed more. Such a lovely campsite. Extremely clean and well presented. There are many comments about the toilets being dated and yes they are but they are in perfect working order and do the job! It adds to the camping experience - definitely better than digging a hole!! Used cafe on site for breakfast, really nice food, highly recommend. Paul is really helpful and answers queries very quickly. No complaints at all! Look forward to returning. Thanks.

Liked: Lovely friendly staff on arrival, loved that we could chose our own pitch around the lake. Such a tranquil site. If I'm honest I was worried about the toilets due to the previous reviews but they were clean and tidy with plenty of toilet roll and they were cleaned while we were there. We had amazing chilled out weekend and will definitely be back.

Camping pod (four person)

Liked: The site was easily found, plenty of space between pods, tents, caravans and static caravans. The beds in the pod were comfortable, it was warm and fortunately water tight as we had a very bad storm.

Disliked: I'll start at the very beginning, reception closed on arrival and poor signage as to where the Pod I'd booked was. Handwritten sign on reception door with a phone number,to ring. No answer. Staff in next door cafe directed me to Pods and said key would be in door, so no welcome or instruction on park rules, you know the usual. Pod was duly found with key in door, and site owner rang me an hour and a half after I arrived asking if I had managed to get settled in. It was evident the pod had not been cleaned properly; there was an empty bottle, a dog ball and a lot of dog hair around. No safety instructions anywhere, just a no smoking sign, no fire extinguisher we did find an old fire blanket in a box. No smoke alarm. The provided fridge had not been defrosted in quite a while and needed a clean, the microwave again needed a good clean, (never used it), a kettle and a fan heater were also provided. Everything was plugged in to a four way extension socket, which at least had a PAT test sticker on it. The light switch was almost on the floor behind the fridge a little difficult to access, good job we had torches. The whole pod was in need of a good deep clean inside. The outside needed a good wash down and a new coat of wood preservative and some minor general repairs. A night there was no external lights and the long walk to the amenities block could be perilous without a torch. The amenities block outside a working sink with lots of very hot water, hot enough to scald a child and one filthy rusty sink that was not connected. Being disabled I tried the disabled facilities with no luck; I have the special key to open the doors but it would not work. The wash room was tidy, however the showers had tiles missing from the cubicles and lots of bare wires on show from a previous coin operated system. Again water very hot but plenty of it.

From the manager: hi thanks for your review the pods are £15 per person per night. its not the Hilton we do have new disabled facilities in the main building, had you asked we of course would have directed you to them for not being aware of this i do apologise , staff are on site and my phone is on 24h and in window of office have a pleasant day
