  • Well-maintained and friendly site with spectacular views of Bannow Bay
  • Horse and pony trekking available from the site
  • Dog-friendly setting a 45-minute drive from ferries at Rosslare
Apart from winning the lottery, there probably aren't many things more blissful than a horsey canter along an Irish beach. If this too is your idea of what you'd do on any holiday, you're well placed to sort it at Wexford's Roches Campervan and Campsite: it's right on the Bannow estuary and the site owners run a horse and pony trekking centre alongside their working dairy farm. You might not be able to imagine many views more blissful than over the sea from Roches either – perhaps a view of a winning lottery ticket...? And the site also has direct access to the bay: it's in the sunny south east of Ireland with loads of beaches and historical sites nearby, and kayak hire is available on site. Base yourself here for fab flat and bass fishing in the estuary too, and walks alongside it, and splendid Wexford beaches, and old old sites like Tintern Abbey and the Clonmines castles. Pubs, a chemist, two supermarkets, a tyre centre and hair salons are at the local village of Wellingtonbridge a short drive away. Roches has a shower and toilet block, internet access, charging facilities and chemical disposal. Barbecues and campfires are allowed, but if you're too blissed out/knackered after your horse ride to sort supper, trot along to one of the several nearby pubs serving tasty feed – trad Irish music sessions are often on the menu too. Music is also available on site at weekends in June, July and August, with midweek karaoke for the kids. The site is 45 minutes from Rosslare if you're heading to/from Europe and want an overnight stay.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Location was great. The toilet block and shower facilities were really clean. The people running the site were very accommodating and helpful. Of the site was stunning.

Disliked: I would’ve said there was nothing but on Saturday night there was a group of two caravans and two campervan who had set up. We were out during the day and fight being told by the owners of the campsite to be quiet they continued party in the morning, and then after that continue to shout and talk among each other, which wasn’t the side, but it would’ve been nice if someone could’ve told them to stop screaming

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Entertainment, security and scenery of the place, the host and the staff were very friendly, located near some nice spots including hook lighthouse a must see!!

Disliked: Entertainment hall where bank played was very small and with small kids as a solo traveller it's not ideal waiting in the cold for a space at a table to become available

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Fantastic view.

Disliked: No one at reception, phoned, answer machine. Finally met after 7pm the next day. We had to go to her. Toilet block clean but no hot water or hot hand dryer. Shower block, mobiles, 4 showers in a row like ones at pop concerts at 2 euros per shower. Pitch site, left to investigate with no guidance about where to look. We pitched in the large field in front of us, which is steep, had a job finding a flat area. Only there for 2 nights & found more level area next day but didn't feel up to moving. Although we cannot blame the high winds on the site owners, they were aware that the daily tides were a problem, we were not. This was the most expensive and the worst. We stayed at 4 campsites in Ireland this trip.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Wonderful views, lovely rural setting and walks nearby. No wifi but had phone signal. Camp kitchen with kettle, fridge, and microwave were nice to have. Ample seating areas. Coffee trailer and chippy trailer on site but neither opened while we were there. There are only two unisex bathrooms with toilet and shower combined but during busier times they have additional shower trailers/sani-cans brought in. One of the nicest bathroom set ups I’ve seen at a campsite and well-maintained. Showers €2. We chose this site as it allowed campfires and the site offered fire pit hire for £5/night which was a great amenity! Great for all kinds of campers and family-friendly

Disliked: Tent pitch was on a slight slope making for a sleep-and-slide event every night

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great spot. Especially if you like fishing a ebiking. Staff very kind indeed. Would highly recommend. BUT

Disliked: Their twin rogue old dog English Springer Spaniel. (His territory). Whom roamed the site eyeing all young dogs. Sneaked up being playful and kind then turned into a sexual rogue dog. Shocking. F ing the bum and mouth then attacking the young dog when he tried to stand up for himself. It caused great distress for all. The other twin dog I was told was fine. Others had to grab his hind legs and pull him away. It was not always possible to carry this out. He continually sneak up around and under transport. VERY SAD. DISTRESSING. Nearly ruined the stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice place, clean, nice staff

Disliked: Only complaint was the music in the seating area was playing quite loud all night. I got up at around 2am to use the bathroom and there was nobody in the seating area but the music was blasting and I couldn't find any switches to turn it off. It is literally playing music 24hrs. Found it very difficult to fall back asleep as I could hear it from our tent which was disappointing as you want to be listening to the nature sounds and birds throughout your camping trip....not country western music.

Local attractions

The ruin of 13th-century Tintern Abbey (not the Wordsworth one) is one of many old sites to see in Co Wexford and its surrounds. See also Hook Lighthouse at nearby Hook Head, the oldest working lighthouse in the world, and 16th-century Duncannon Fort with its maritime museum. Several towns and villages are around Bannow Bay (although do go fishing first): pedal or potter around the likes of Saltmills, Newtown, Ballygow, Ballyowen and the splendidly named Haggard Bridge to carefully compare the Guinness in each. If you're lucky enough to be on an extended trip (perhaps with the aid of that winning lottery ticket), make your way from Roches to the ferry port at Rosslare, from where you can sail serenely on to Fishguard and Pembroke in Wales, or to Cherbourg or Roscoff in la belle France.
