  • Comfy, well-equipped rental tent with river views in Skibbereen, Cork
  • Tragumna beach, sailing, cruises and swimming within 15 minutes’ drive
  • Shower and kitchen, private garden with chiminea; near pubs and shops
Everyone needs to get away from it all at times, and where better to dig down and chill than River Ilen View? This cosy and luxurious rental tent is hidden away in beautiful West Cork fields near the lively market town of Skibbereen (five minutes’ drive). It’s in pole position with spectacular views over the River Ilen (does the name give it away?) but the fabulousness doesn’t end there. Inside your cute, canvas home-from-home, there are two single beds mattresses (all linen is provided for an additional fee and floor mats can be provided for additional guests). The rental tent has access to a unit with a shower, toilet and sink, as well as a separate kitchen area with a sink unit, store cupboard, kettle and basic cutlery, bowls and mugs. Outside, you can bask in evening sunlight in your very own private garden, with a bar counter overlooking the river, plus a barbecue and a chiminea to keep you toasty warm on cooler evenings. Pick up bits and bobs for the grill in Skibbereen, where there are several pubs serving good food – and some have live music outdoors at the weekends. Luckily it’s only a 30-minute walk back to base, so you can leave the car behind and really relax over a couple of pints.

Local attractions

You can’t visit this pretty corner of Ireland without mucking about in the sea – and sheltered Tragumna beach (10 minutes) is a fab spot for family swims. Remote Ballyrisode (40 minutes) has rock-pooling adventures plus oodles of room for running around and burning off energy, while Lough Hyne (both 15 minutes’ drive) is another hotspot for swimming and kayaking. Fancy getting out on the ocean wave? You can take sailing lessons at Schull (30 minutes), and if that seems like hard work, join whale-watching cruises from Baltimore Harbour (15 minutes). Back on dry land, you can explore the lush countryside on horseback (15 minutes), or cycle West Cork’s rural lanes. Not brought the bike? No problem, you can hire one in Skibbereen (five minutes). For more sedate pursuits, mug up on local history at Skibbereen Heritage Centre (five minutes), where enlightening displays cover the Great Irish Famine, or pay a visit to the 18th-century, whitewashed Baltimore Beacon (20 minutes) to see wild Atlantic waves crashing against the shoreline.
