  • Small adults-only site on organic working farm on the Somerset Levels
  • A 10-minute drive from Glastonbury; 15 minutes from Wells
  • Gastro pub and tea rooms just over a mile away
Looking for a peaceful pitstop surrounded by green meadows with views towards the Mendip Hills and Glastonbury Tor? Just as the nearby Avalon Marshes nature reserves welcome resting birds, Garslade Farm is a friendly place to relax and take it easy for a bit. In the winter, these fields are home to an organic sheep business run by Mike and Bridget, whose family have looked after this land since 1830. When summer comes, the lambs make way for the caravan park and campsite – with hard tracks throughout to give the humans easy access. You could spend your whole break soaking up the serenity of these surroundings, but if you want to do a few days trips, a wander around the cathedral city of Wells would be a suitably civilised way to start. Take the short but strenuous hike up Glastonbury Tor to spot all the sights in this unique landscape, then gawp at Britain’s biggest gorge – and go below into the caverns – at Cheddar Gorge. Practicalities on site are covered with toilets, showers, washing up, recycling and wifi. Barbecues are allowed, but you might decide to let someone else do all the hard work at the award-winning gastro pub in Godney – just over a mile away – or the tea rooms at Double Gate Farm (you’ll need to book ahead before all the chips or scones get gobbled up). Whichever you pick, there should be a good night's sleep to follow, as there's an 11pm noise curfew on site.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Helpful staff that had top tips for where to pitch up. I had a sheltered spot with a view of Glastonbury Tor in the distance. Flushing toilets, hot showers and hot water to wash up. Friendly campers and quiet at night. Guides for local dog walks from the campsite were great. All in all a great site.

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: Peaceful, quiet site with lovely surrounding views. The manager Veronica was fabulous. She even provided fresh lemon and ginger for my husbands sore throat. Only a short drive from Glastonbury too. I'd definitely go again.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: A lovely relaxed and friendly host. A good feeling of space. A very fair price. All basics catered for. Excellent location with lots to do and see very close. The local Pub happened to have a ‘disco’ the Saturday night we were there. Having a dance a real bonus.

Disliked: It is a working farm, so utility rather than luxury. Not for me a negative as taking the whole package, ie space, relaxation, location, price and facilities into account we will definitely be back as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

Liked: Once again another successful visit to this lovely rural campsite. The town of Glastonbury is only 3 miles away, so a nice walk or cycle into town through the countryside. The campsite has clean facilities and a friendly host.

Local attractions

The Somerset Levels and Moors make up one of the largest lowland wetlands in Britain and a visit to the Avalon Marshes Centre and RSPB nature reserves will introduce you to their history and ecology. Time your visit right and you may witness the incredible starling murmurations. If you love shopping you really need to experience the unique mix of retailers in Glastonbury, a town long linked with the mythical and mystical. For a more mainstream selection try Clark’s Village factory shopping outlet. Meanwhile, Cheddar’s the place to shop for cheese (and cider). A classic seaside day out can be had at Weston-super-Mare – sandcastles, fish and chips, donkey rides on the beach, entertainments on the pier, it’s all here. Or if you’d like a different view of the coast, head to Brean Down, a 300ft-high headland that sticks out a mile and a half into the Bristol Channel with a ruined Napoleonic fort at the end.
