  • Wild camping with Glastonbury Tor views in Somerset’s Mendip Hills
  • A 10-minute drive to Wells, and 20 minutes from Glastonbury
  • Wildlife and walks on site; pub a five-minute stroll away
With a spectacular south-facing position on the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, Croscombe Camping overlooks open countryside and the pretty little village of Croscombe – and you can even glimpse Glastonbury Tor in the distance. This is relaxed and definitely wild camping, so simply turn up and pitch your tent wherever you like in the field. There’s masses of room for couples, families and their dogs (on a lead please), and while campfires and barbecues are allowed, please raise them off the ground to protect the grass. Simple facilities include hot showers and flushable loos. As long as it’s dry you can park next to your tent, and if not, there’s a car park on site. There are no bins though, so please take your rubbish home to recycle. You can get on to country walks right from the campsite, where you might get to see foxes, badgers, deer and rabbits, or bring your bikes and enjoy a cycle ride around quiet country lanes. It’s only a five-minute walk to the nearest pub, The George, which serves Somerset scrumpy cider along with excellent pub food, takeaways and pizza on Saturdays.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had a lovely couple of nights here despite the forecasted sunny weather taking a turn for wind and rain. We particularly liked being able to arrive and depart without time constraints, and just the ease of finding everything. The showers, toilets and washing up facilities were kept clean throughout our stay. The lovely owner came by in the evening to deliver wood/kindling and fire baskets if needed. This was a fantastic base for us to explore nearby Bruton and Frome. We’ll definitely be back!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A beautiful campsite, just as described. An open field with stunning views. A relaxed approach of pitch where you want, loads of space for all and very reasonably priced. Basic facilities but as expected for the price. That said, they were clean and well maintained. The local pub is an absolute jem and only 10 minutes walk. Amazing food and friendly staff.

Disliked: The 10 minute walk to the pub is 10 minutes down a steep hill!! The walk back up after is a bit of a killer!!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We loved the view at Croscombe and the warm welcome from Emma. The facilities are also pretty good. Three toilets which are cleaned daily, three hot showers and a washing up area. Definitely recommend!

Disliked: We had some of the other guests playing music that carried through and also a road was recognisable.

Local attractions

Catch the Somerset history vibe with visits to the flamboyant, Gothic-era Wells Cathedral (10 minutes’ drive), and check out the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens too. Glastonbury (20 minutes) has an atmospheric abbey of its own, and loads of quirky little shops selling joss sticks and silver jewellery, while the darker side of local life is revealed on ghostly guided walks of Shepton Mallet Prison (10 minutes). Want to breathe in more of that fresh Somerset air? Scramble up to the top of Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes) for far-reaching views of the Somerset Levels (30 minutes), where you can spot wading birds on walks and cycles through sleepy villages. For more hardcore exercise, take a climbing course on the limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes). Animatronic dinosaurs, cave tours and mini golf may well keep kids entertained for much of the day at Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes), or you can clamber aboard a steam train on the East Somerset Railway (15 minutes) to chug through the countryside. And if you’re holidaying with teens, pray they don’t know about Clarks Village (25 minutes), or they’ll be busy spending your retirement fund in the cut-price designer outlet stores.
