The grounds of the inn

  • In the grounds of a country inn in Exmoor National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Watchet and 30 from Taunton and Minehead
  • Pub classics, evening specials and carvery night at the restaurant
Spectacular national park views, local eats and a traditional English country inn? If that’s ticking your boxes, scurry along to Ralegh's Cross Inn, an adults-only site 15 minutes’ drive from the Somerset coastal town of Watchet. In the grounds of the Ralegh's Cross Inn, the site is – as one might imagine – exceptionally well placed when hunger strikes. It’s a short amble from pitches to the restaurant, where chefs cook up local ingredients for pub classics, light lunches, evening specials and (on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays) carvery spreads. Of course, there’s more to travel than the food, and the site’s in a top spot for adventures beyond tickling taste buds too. Just inside the south eastern edge of Exmoor National Park, it’s well suited to energetic explorers who are keen to venture out on hikes and bikes, and there’s bike rental available 35 minutes away. For hols spent by the sea, it’s an easy 15 minutes to the nearest (pebble) beach in Watchet, and half an hour to the sands of Minehead. Once everyone tires of splashing about, a return to site should prove calming: soak up views towards Dunkery Beacon (Exmoor’s highest point), Bristol Channel and the Welsh hills.

What customers say

A peaceful, adult-only campsite near a welcoming pub. Spacious, mostly level pitches, good facilities (some need updates). The pub offers great, affordable food and large portions. Perfect for Exmoor exploration, it's great value with a relaxed vibe. Many want to return.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Site itself was nice and loo blocks clean. Only one washing up sink though.

Disliked We picked this site due to it being a pub campsite and tried to book a pub table in advance but were told we could just rock up and would definitely be able to eat.

When we arrived on the Saturday evening at 6.15, we were told they were no longer taking bookings because it was so busy, being a Bank Holiday weekend. They told others there was a 2-2.5hr wait. Then, after a bit, we were told we could just order cold starters and desserts which is what we opted to do. I am a diabetic and this general lack of mains did not make my life very easy but I have to eat and inject.

As an aside, the information on Pitchup is misleading because in some places it says barbecues are allowed, in others they're not. They're not - which was frustrating as we actually had back-up BBQ food on board but couldn't cook it as an alternative!

All they need to do is a) update Pitchup. b) either introduce a pub bookings system, or train staff to manage expectations around actually getting food on the phone, if they insist on not having such a system.

A disappointing stay (and response from the site about our complaint). Be warned... they will not necessarily feed you properly if they're busy (even if it is early) and you may therefore miss out on the 'pub camping' experience.

Liked Staff were friendly, both in the pub and the guy that showed us to our pitch and explained the set up.
Pitches were nice and flat and the site wasn’t too big and was lovely and quiet.
The showers were nice and hot, you just had to keep pressing the button before the water stopped.
The pub was a bonus, especially when the weather really got too hot, it was lovely and cool inside. The Sunday carvery looked lovely but we had already sorted our dinner.

Disliked Could have done with more than one washing up point.

Liked Lovely site. Was shown the field and asked where I'd prefer to be. Big enough so that I could get a quiet area. Good facilities. Pub is really nice and has nice food too.
Price is about what camping should be. Well done Raleghs Cross.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked 3 big fields to choose from. 2 with electrical hook up. £12 per night.
Great toilets at the back of the pub. With showers with slate floor and very hot water. Great food in the pub. (They serve breakfast to campers too).

Disliked No hard core pitches available.
Out in the country. So you need transport to go anywhere else.

Local attractions

Make the most of Exmoor stays by signing up immediately for an Exmoor Wildlife Safari, clambering into the back of a Land Rover for guided excursions through the park, keeping eyes peeled for deer and the rare Exmoor ponies. There are no long treks to get going either, as the tour guides will pick guests up at Dunster, Dulverton or Exford, all within about 25 minutes’ drive. Get a closer look at some of the area’s wildlife (as well as some more exotic specimens) at Tropiquaria, a small Art Deco zoo in a former BBC radio transmitter station 10 minutes from base, or travel a little further (30 minutes) to the Exmoor Pony Centre to learn about the native ponies and even take a ride in the park. If interest in watery getaways was piqued by beach days in Minehead and Watchet, but less salt would be preferable, head along to Wimbleball Lake or Clatworthy Reservoir (both within 15 minutes) – the first for birdwatching, trout fishing and lessons in windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and rowing, and the second for pretty scenery, boat hire and fishing. Dip a toe into the past by visiting the Museum of Somerset and the military and cricket museums in Taunton, half an hour away, then dive further in with trips to Dunster Castle, Fyne Court and Knightshayes, all within 35 minutes of base. Prefer to finish hols on a celebratory note? Stumble over to Yearlstone Vineyard (40 minutes) for a tipple or two.
