With a wonderfully rural and peaceful location in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding National Beauty, The Paddock at Munthayes is a small, family-run campsite. With just a few pitches and plenty of space, there’s room for kids to play safely, and with the camping field set right next to a working farm, you’re set to get acquainted with cows, chickens and sheep, as well as the odd tractor trundling by.
Keen cyclists? This really is a smashing base for exploring on two wheels. You can get off piste in the Quantock Hills (40 minutes’ drive) and easier family cycling routes lead up to Wellington Monument (15 minutes) or Culmstock Beacon (20 minutes).
And walkers, you can take to the hills too, with masses of hard hiking or family strolls in the Quantocks and Blackdowns, while the beaches at Seaton and Sidmouth (both 40 minutes) await for swimming, paddleboarding or kayaking.
Back at camp, basic facilities include portable toilets and showers, and you can pick up bits for barbecues in Churchinford (five minutes) village. There’s a cracking farm shop in Offwell (20 minutes) and a dairy selling delicious ice cream in Honiton (20 minutes, don’t tell the kids), and if you’d rather eat out, there’s no shortage of traditional country pubs serving local foods and ciders to be found in local villages.
