  • Dog-friendly, family-run site in the east Somerset countryside
  • A 25-minute drive from Glastonbury and half an hour from Cheddar Gorge
  • Wood available to buy for firepits; a short drive to two country pubs
Got a thing for wildlife spotting, stargazing or swinging from hammocks? Then, set down for a stay surrounded by the east Somerset countryside at Greendayz Organic Smallholding and Campsite. From this family-run, family-friendly and dog-friendly site, you’ll be well-based for all of the above, as well as a generous dose of fresh air… Surrounded by a working smallholding with fields actively used throughout the year, this site is really rather peaceful, even with the pigs and chickens. Yet, it’s still just 25 minutes’ drive away from Glastonbury (and it’s easy to get to the site as well, as the A303 is only 15 minutes’ drive away, making the place potentially handy for a quick stopover). One other nice perk to this place is that you’ll be free to pick a plot wherever you please within the four-acre field. With all the open spaces, there are plenty of spots for kids to let off some steam and for families to play games, look out for wildlife or build firepits (there’s wood available to buy on site for that if you need). Unwind with a barbecue too - there are already two on site, but it may be better to bring your own with you. If hammocks are your thing, the site says feel free to string a few up between the trees or posts. As this location is quite off grid, there’s a compost toilet for guests to use, facilities for freezing ice packs and mobile charging points in the office. When you need to shop for supplies, there are large supermarkets in Shepton Mallet (10 minutes’ drive) and Wincanton (20 minutes) or a smaller food shop, butchers and pubs serving tasty grub in Castle Cary (10 minutes). Two country pubs are also within five minutes’ drive of the site.

Local attractions

Glastonbury (25 minutes’ drive) may be known as a festival location, but this destination is also a great place for peaceful walks up to Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes), ruined abbey adventures and visiting the ancient Chalice Well. Over in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the limestone Cheddar Gorge (half an hour) makes for more gorgeous walks. The Mendip Activity Centre (35 minutes) will continue the adventurous times too, perhaps through tobogganing, axe throwing, archery, canoeing, caving or skiing (just take your pick). A top climbing destination around these parts is the Fairy Cave Quarry (15 minutes), set among the same limestone. You may want to head for the hills instead, and if so, some splendid options include the National Trust’s Cley Hill (half an hour) and Combe Hill Wood (20 minutes).

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Really relaxed campsite, owners really easy to talk to and happy to have a chat with us, even gave us some fresh eggs from their hens. Pigs on site too - always a win! Our dog really enjoyed the freedom given on site, open field and dog was able to roam around. Could barely hear the cars on the road, just the occasional animal noise. Perfect for a chilled out camping getaway!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Campsite located in beautiful Somerset.

Disliked: At the campsite you do hear constant noise of the surrounding traffic. The facilities are very basic. Only one watertape and composttoilets. We have been camping with composttoilet in various campsites but always in better condition as here. There is nothing special about this campsite.

From the manager: We are sorry for you thoughts about Greendayz. The traffic noise was due to a local diversion due to broadband cable installation in the local village of Evercreech. All other campers have found the locations of water taps acceptable along with the toilet facilities and they care checked regularly throughout the day for condition and cleanliness.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Very friendly host. Lovely, basic campsite in a quiet site. Pigs were a huge hit with everyone and being able to go in with them and feed them and rub their bellies was super cute! We got fresh eggs from the chickens too which were delicious! Being able to gather wood and have a fire was also brilliant. Plenty of space for the kids to run and play too.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Was Bike packing from London to Lands End and stopped for one night on route, great little camp spot ideal to get back to basics. The compostable toilet was probably nicer than many plumbed in once if I'm honest! The field was cut nicely and there was plenty of space for everyone not to be crammed in. The GreenDayz staff were really nice and very helpful, the pigs and other animals are also a fun bonus. Would stay again.
