Roundhouse with a grassed roof

  • Quiet, family-friendly Somerset retreat 10 minutes’ drive from Chard
  • Staple Hill walks 10 minutes’ drive; Jurassic Coast half an hour
  • Roundhouses in a wildflower meadow with modern shower rooms
When you’re looking for something a bit unusual for a bolthole in Somerset’s Blackdown Hills National Landscape, Buzzard’s Nest Glamping, 10 minutes’ drive from Chard and merely minutes by car from the A303, is something to get excited about. Book in here and you'll be staying in roundhouses crafted from sustainable natural materials – including straw bales – and set in wildflower meadows. Mature woods screen all the fields, so should feel pleasantly removed from modern life. Inside the roundhouses all is comfort and cosiness, with each containing a king-size bed, a pull-out sofa bed and vital gadgets like a kettle, mini fridge and breakfast table. An ensuite compost loo completes the experience, so you’ll have no alfresco fumbling about outside after dark. Each roundhouse has a private decked verandah, from which you can look out for wildlife such as roe deer (if you don’t approach them, they will just carry on grazing in the fields), lizards hidden under wood piles and buzzards nesting in the woods edging the camping field – and lending their name to the site. Guests can access modern shower rooms, a lounge (great for any inclement weather) and a well-equipped communal kitchen. If self-catering doesn’t do it for you, the site owners offer a cooked breakfast and/or an evening meal on request and at an additional cost.
