  • Dog-friendly shepherd’s hut on a working smallholding in Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from the New Forest; short drive to several museums
  • Paddock for your own horses; kitchen and veranda; several pubs nearby
Whether it’s sunset veranda sessions with your preferred potion or checking out the local wildlife, breaking out into Hampshire and the New Forest National Park should be light work from The Barns. On the border between the two, this peaceful shepherd’s hut is in the grounds of a natural, working smallholding one mile away from Alderholt… a scenic, semi-rural Dorset spot. Here, there are many ways to spend your days… on the open horse riding spaces in the New Forest National Park? Or setting down in one of several local pubs or restaurants a few miles away? First, you might want to do the rounds to see the fresh veg and meet the animals, including Fat Pig, Amos the ram, Jet the horse, Skye the husky and Kitty the cat. Handily, well-behaved dogs are welcome and there’s a paddock available for your horse to graze (and plenty of riding from the field). What about that new abode of yours? Well, the hut (with parking right in the yard) has a built-in shower room, plug-in radiators, a smart TV (with Netflix and Prime ready to log in but no aerial channels), a double bed, wardrobe and dining table. The kitchen area is decked out with an electric hob, oven, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge, sink and all the usual utensils and basics such as tea, coffee, sugar, washing up liquid, cleaning products and soap. You’ll only need your own bed linen and towels (it’s extra to have these provided) and a small travel cot is available for a small child for free.

Local attractions

Turn back the clock… while you’re finding your way around, you’ll soon find that history’s around a fair few corners. And there are lots of ages to uncover, from the Rockbourne Roman Villa (five minutes’ drive) to the traditional countryside museum and Elizabethan collections at Breamore House (15 minutes). The house at the Museum of East Dorset (half an hour) dates back to the 1500s, while Knowlton Church and Earthworks (20 minutes) is a Norman church smack bang in a Neolithic henge earthwork. The historic sites don’t end there though, as there’s the fashionable house and garden at Arundells (25 minutes) and The Salisbury Museum (25 minutes) all about medieval Salisbury and ancient Stonehenge. You’ll be following in the footsteps of old-fashionable society at some other historical properties, including the National Trust-managed Kingston Lacy (35 minutes), a fine mansion with some splendid gardens and parklands, and the big old estate at Wilton House (25 minutes). Once you’ve sharpened up your history knowledge, snow sports might be next on your list to master. If so, Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre & Snowsports Shop (20 minutes) runs skiing, snowboarding, ringos and ski bobs.
