  • Family-friendly glamping site a five-minute walk from Swanage Beach
  • Corfe Castle 10 minutes’ drive; Blue Pool 20 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; barbecues allowed; on-site golf and frisbee-golf course
Camping is all about horses for courses: some people want to stay somewhere so remote that it’s accessible only by car, while others prefer the convenience of getting to the site by train and then being able to reach everything within a short walk. If you belong in the second camp (and if you are after a holiday at the seaside), Glamping at Swanage Bijou by PitchingIt, in Dorset, might well be the answer to your prayers. You’ll have little need for your car at this family- and dog-friendly Swanage site, since it’s only a short stroll from the High Street (about 10 minutes) and an even shorter stroll from the beach (five minutes). Despite being so close to town, though, the site feels remarkably peaceful – likely thanks to the high hedges that surround it and make it feel more secluded than it is. Bell tents decorated with bunting and floral accents sit on a level grassy field that’s part of Kirkwood Park, an outdoor complex that includes an 18-hole golf course, plus foot and frisbee golf. There is also direct access to a well-equipped playground and to a skateboard park with multiple ramps where the kids can practise their kickturns and flips. Toilets and hot-water showers complete the picture, alongside an area where you can wash up after your barbecue. The nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away (10 minutes on foot), but if you prefer to let someone else take care of the cooking, there are lots of restaurants and cafés within walking distance.

Beautiful bell tent

Liked: A lovely campsite, very friendly host and lots of facilities available including socket and communal fridge. So close to the sandy beach - we walked and it was lovely, a great base for our Dorset getaway

Disliked: I didn’t hear from the company I booked with until they replied to my what’s app message the morning of checking in. I get that a confirmation email is enough but I’m so used to a welcome email from the host shortly before arriving

Local attractions

Swanage has a sandy beach and shallow waters for paddling close to the shore; the beach is also popular for paddleboarding, fishing and snorkelling. You can follow the South West Coast Path (which runs along the seafront) to explore the Purbeck Heritage Coast, or catch a ride on the Swanage Steam Railway. The village of Corfe Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is dominated by the atmospheric hilltop ruins of a fortress built in medieval times and destroyed during the 17th-century English Civil War. From here you can also take in far-reaching views of the Purbeck Hills and the Isle of Wight. Take a stroll around the Blue Pool (20 minutes), looking for the most Instagrammable spots along the shoreline of this forest-fringed lake. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for assorted warblers, plus sika deer and wild ponies, then take a load off your feet in the tea room, where you can sample locally crafted ice creams and beers.
