  • Quiet family-run Dorset park 20 minutes' walk from Lyme Regis
  • Charmouth 10 minutes’ drive; Beer 20 minutes; Chesil Beach 50 minutes
  • Shop and snack bar; pop-up dining in summer; pub 10 minutes’ walk
Set in peaceful countryside on the border between Devon and Dorset, Hook Farm Campsite in Uplyme is a peaceful family-run holiday park in pole position for family adventures along the Jurassic Coast and in the pretty seaside town of Lyme Regis (20 minutes' walk/five minutes’ drive). Once you’ve settled in, owners John and Jacky and their close-knit team at reception are happy to advise on sightseeing and local walks, or provide information on local events and attractions. The adjacent shop is stocked with camping essentials, basic foods and barbecue bits, as well as sweets and snacks to keep the kids going. The staples store in Uplyme (10 minutes’ walk) has anything you can’t find in the site shop, and there’s a pub serving home-cooked food and real ales. For food fanatics, pop-up food trucks stop by Hook Farm in high season, and it’s also close to River Cottage (35 minutes’ drive, famed as the restaurant of TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall), as well as an assortment of local pubs and restaurants showcasing local food and drinks. The campsite is situated within a dark-skies area, so you might get lucky weatherwise and observe star-studded night skies from the comfort of your pitch.

Powered grass campervan campsite (medium, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Warm welcome. Location close to Lime Regis and a river side walk into town. Facilities on site were good. The terraced pitches. The view from our pitch.

Disliked: Having to pay 20p for a 4 minute shower. It only took me 2 minutes to shower, but there was no option to turn the shower off manually. This was a waste of water. If a meter was to be used, then 10p for 2 minutes would be better. For those that prefer a longer shower, then they could take 2 x 10p!! Shame there was no free wifi, although apparently over the winter, this issue may improve.

Primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked: The majority of the staff were lovely and very helpful. The site is on a steep hill and well spaced out raised pitches have been created to provide level bases for tents. The site is very convenient for Lyme Regis. The additional 20p charge per shower provided 4 minutes hot water and this was ample.

Disliked: The site is on a steep gradient and the laundry facilities are at the top of the site. After 3 solid days of rain we needed to dry the towels we use for our dogs, my husband is recovering from a knee replacement and I am receiving physio and because there were a lot of towels and they were were heavy we drove up to the to the laundry block, we started to park on a gravel area and a member of staff pounced on us stating that no one is allowed to drive to the block or park, as users are expected to walk to the facilities. We of course moved the car but were not given the opportunity to explain. Additional laundry equipment needs to be installed in the second toilet block at the bottom of the site so that customers don't have to carry wash loads up and down the site. Due to soft ground some tent pitches cannot be reached by car, which means that kit has to be carried up and down hill to set up and pack up. Wifi is provided by a third party and charges were expensive.

Powered grass tent campsite (large)

Liked: Clean toilets, flat pitch, spacious, 45 mins walk to the beach/Lyme Regis

Disliked: Slightly laborious check-in process of queuing in car, bit of a nothing / sanitised vibe to the campsite, felt like camping in a car park rather than getting in touch with wilderness.

Primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked: This is a lovely quiet, leafy, campsite. The staff are very welcoming. Pitches are well spaced out. Toilet/shower facilities beautifully clean, as are washing up sinks (with bowls provided). Small shop on site open from 9am for bits and bobs. Freezers available for refreezing ice blocks. Easy access to fantastic riverside walk to Lyme Regis town. Thank you.

Disliked: WiFi by external provider is a bit expensive (I think it was £20 for a week)

Local attractions

Dedicated star-gazers can stroll up to Trinity Hill Nature Reserve (45 minutes’ walk), awarded Dark Sky Discovery Site status thanks to its lack of light pollution. Hook Farm is also a handy base camp for walkers in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (direct from site), and has ready access to the South West Coast Path (half an hour), while following the East Devon Way (five minutes) gives you a handy riverside shortcut down to the sea. Historic Lyme Regis (five minutes’ drive) is known for the fossils and ammonites found on its sands, and is gateway to the dramatic seascapes of the Jurassic Coast. You can hunt for more ancient treasures on the beach at Charmouth (10 minutes), and wander along the pebble spit at Chesil Beach (50 minutes). The lively (and lovely) seaside town of Beer (20 minutes) has a photogenic fishing harbour and several contemporary art galleries to mooch around, and if the kids are with you, you’ll probably end up at The Donkey Sanctuary (also 20 minutes), where you can feed and cuddle rescue donkeys.
