  • Quiet, secluded, well-maintained rural site 3.5 miles from Charmouth
  • Small family-run, family friendly (non-commercial) site
  • With spa, beauty treatments, massage, aromatherapy
Do you rather fancy a Swedish massage, please? Or a lounge in a spa, or some beauty and therapy treatments without having to go off site...? The Dorset Hideaway might be small and rural, but for what's on offer on site, it's perfectly formed. This is a holiday retreat for serious relaxation in the Dorset countryside: on-site beauty sessions include everything from facials, manicures and pedicures, to massages and holistic therapies. There's also a modern toilet block and a washing-up area. The Dorset Hideaway also has firepit hire (please request this at check-in and pay in cash), wood and kindling for sale and a book exchange. A fishing pond is on site, where any anglers will need a fishing rod licence; there is a small daily fishing fee to be paid in cash on site too. The setting is in farmland a few miles from the Jurassic Coast, with a glowingly good local landscape overlooking Dorset's highest coast and countryside hills. Although it's secluded and peaceful, it's only three miles from the main road for getting out and about – suitably relaxed and refreshed – around Dorset.

Liked: shower and toilet facilities are excellent and very clean, love that they have radio playing in there! The dog washroom was absolutely incredible! Really helpful as it was a very wet and muddy weekend when we stayed, so meant we could keep our little pooch clean and dry! Brilliant!

Disliked: Nothing we disliked! Was amazing!

Liked: The campsite was safe and welcoming. We were greeted and personally shown to our pitch. The pitch was ample for our needs. The facilities were close by and clean. The water was always hot for a shower and washing up. It was a really nice atmosphere on site with a mix of families with young babies and children, older children, adult groups of mixed ages and a lot of seasonal caravanners. The dogs on site were exceptionally well behaved and the majority of pitches were not woken by my silly dog that cried a lot on our first night! The children all played on the communal pitch happily until dusk and the adults then chatted happily into the night. The barn area was a welcome addition with Pool, table football and ping pong. It had a really nice community feel with the teens being really considerate of the younger children and vice versa. Adults and children alike all loved the daily tractor trailer ride and it was just another thing that gave the camp a strong sense of community. The small lakes were quietly busy with fishermen and with lots of bees, butterflies and moths throughout the day and evening. There was little light pollution so we could enjoy the stars whilst toasting marshmallows and warming our toes. The camp was quiet throughout the night and (excepting the first night with my dog) we all slept well and peacefully throughout our stay....a really happy camp that I'd recommend to anyone.

Disliked: I don't think I found anything that I didn't like.

Liked: Facilities were clean and modern - showers, toilets, wash-up, washing machine. Dog friendly with a dog cleaning area, which was handy when our dog jumped in a muddy puddle nearby. Quiet and lots of space but pitches are open (no hedges). Not far to Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Eype etc

Disliked: It is dark with no additional lighting which makes it great for star-gazing but you definitely need a good torch. But we knew this when booking so wasn't a problem

Liked: Rural Location, spacious plots, water and electric close to pitches. We were in a campervan and put up an awning on a grass pitch. It’s a quiet site with no light pollution. We saw a baby deer whilst have a morning cuppa run along the boundary hedge and rabbits. We was out touring during the day as it’s within 20 mins of Lyme Regis and within 45 mins of Beer (lovely coastal wall to Bramscombe) and Seaton to name a few.

Disliked: £37 per. Night was in our opinion too high for what the site has. The grass pitches aren’t marked out so little maintenance needed. Toilets and showers were clean but average

Liked: We loved how quiet it was even with the summer holidays and children around. Toilets and showers where clean. Pitch was level, and added bonus of drinking water tap near each pitch so you dont need to walk to get water. We never saw the dog wash room that we saw online but thats ok.

Disliked: Mixed review on this, but the gates dont open before 8am and close at 10.30, when camping with dogs you want to be able to go out early before its too hot. We also ended up in hospital unrelated to the stay at all and was stressing about getting back in through the gates as we knew it would be after 10.30pm when we get back. There was no mobile number to text only a land line that didnt pick up the first few times. So maybe a mobile that can be text and updated without calling at 9pm in an emergency.

Local attractions

Jurassic Coast towns and coves are within a few miles of The Dorset Hideaway, with other top destinations of Dorset, Devon and Somerset within easy driving distance. The main towns of the Jurassic Coast closest to The Dorset Hideaway are all worth a day trip for coast and countryside pursuits: Charmouth for its fossil museum; Bridport for brewery tours at Palmers' and vineyard tours at Furleigh Estate; and Lyme Regis for the Dinosaur Museum, marine aquarium and town museum, full of fossilly finds. More museums – of teddy bear, county and Keep Military – are at Dorchester, along with the Tutankhamun Exhibition, the first outside Egypt to show an exact recreation of Tutankhamun's mummy and one of Dorchester's most-visited attractions. For other museums and history highlights in the region, have a look at (Thomas) Hardy's Cottage just outside Dorchester; the Tolpuddle Martyrs museum at Tolpuddle; Northe Fort, the nineteenth century naval museum at Weymouth, and the castles at Corfe and Sherborne. Seven miles south of Dorchester is another esteemed Jurassic Coast town, Weymouth – head here for sailing, the Sea Life observational tower and the lighthouse and cliffs of Portland Bill (bring camera to here and surrounding Chesil Beach). From Weymouth, drive further along the coast to Swanage, Wareham, Corfe and Poole: Swanage for the Swanage Steam Railway and Studland Beach; Wareham for Monkey World and Cloud's Hill, the birthplace of TE Lawrence; Corfe for an Enid Blyton-style castle and Poole for all sorts of sightseeing including trips to spectacular Brownsea Island. In the other direction from Weymouth, stop off at Seaton to see one of our fave sights along the Devon coast, the Pecorama model and light railways set most scenically in the hills above Beer. From Seaton, head inland to Axminster, Chard, Shaftesbury and Yeovil, or continue along the coast to reach Torquay, Brixham and Paignton.
