  • Spacious yurts on a family-run farm in the South Hams
  • A 15-minute drive from Totnes; half an hour from Paignton
  • High-quality meat and firewood sold on site; dogs welcome
For those not yet in the know, the South Hams is a splendid stretch of rural and coastal landscape between Dartmoor, Torbay and the sea. Dawdle a while in this cracking corner of Devon by settling down in one of the yurts at Allercombe Farm Glamping, part of a family-run farm that stretches over 50 green acres. The accommodation here is rather swish, being fully-furnished and with easy access to the toilets, hot showers and washing-up facilities across the field. Located midway between Dartmoor and Devon’s super south coast, Allercombe Farm Glamping is on the edge of the village of Rattery, home to a pub that’s been in business since at least the 1400s (there's rumoured to be a tunnel connecting the inn to the church, but the landlords are yet to report any parsons purloining the wares…). Back on the farm, a posse of pigs, a herd of Dexter cattle and a number of friendly cats also call the place home. There's also bucketloads of wild animal activity around here, with the usual suspects including roe deer and horseshoe bats. Fresh farm-produced beef, sausages and burgers are sold by the site staff; there are also free-range eggs on hand for breakfasts sunny side up. Self-catering guests can stock up on other bits and pieces in Totnes (15 minutes' drive), where there are several supermarkets and half a dozen delis.

Local attractions

Time in Totnes (15 minutes' drive) is time well spent. Folk flock here for all sorts of reasons, but three of them that you'll often hear will include the town's early Norman castle, its superb Sunday market and the annual Totnes and District Show. Parking up here also means you can set off on a circular adventure, first along the Dartmouth Steam Railway to Kingswear, then (after a 10-minute ferry ride to get to the quay) back by a boat that cruises back to Totnes along the scenic river Dart. Although Buckfast Tonic Wine is its most famous export, Buckfast (15 minutes drive) has given the world more than just potent booze. There's also animal life to observe here at Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, as well as top-notch architecture at beauteous Buckfast Abbey. Time for a swim? Paignton (30 minutes) has oodles of beach space and is well-liked by bathers; it also has a pier where you can indulge the kids with a ride on the slides or carousel. Up for indoor swims on the speedy side? Splashdown Quaywest (30 minutes) will be your best bet.

Heartsease yurt (no pets)

Liked: Location, views, peace and quiet.Local pub was friendly and wonderful food served.Site owner was helpful when contacted. Great wood burner in the yurt ,so cosy in the chilly evenings.

Disliked: Kitchen facilities would have been crowded if site had been full and fridge was small and set incorrectly causing fresh produce to freeze. No hangers in tents for coats

Corncockle yurt

Liked: The yurts are perfectly furnished, plenty of blankets, wood burner and logs and very homey. Great bathroom Facilities and bonus of a shared kitchen area. We loved that the yurts are spaced out so it felt open and we could really relax. We used the bbq provided and loved sitting on the deck stargazing at night. Very welcoming hosts and great suggestions of local walks.

Disliked: That we had to leave!

Corncockle yurt

Liked: Loved everything about this place - tranquil, peaceful, back to nature. A lovely place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle. Yurts were really warm, cosy and dry. King size bed was really comfortable. Little kitchen was fully equipped, toilets and showers were clean. Kids (14yrs, 13yrs ,9yrs old) didn't say they were bored once! The dog thoroughly enjoyed his time in the countryside and came home exhausted. Hosts were really lovely and friendly and more than happy to offer help and assistance if required. They thought of everything to make for a comfortable stay. It was lovely to stay on their farm. The eggs and sausages from the farm were delicious.
