  • Back to basics pitches on a 130-acre farm on the edge of Exmoor
  • A 10-minute drive from Combe Martin beach; 20 minutes from Woolacombe
  • Barn with wood-fired pizzas and full breakfasts at weekends
Furze Park Camping has wild camping pitches on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, just outside Kentisbury Ford and around 20 minutes’ drive from Barnstaple. This rural farm site is part of an organic livestock enterprise that’s spread over 16 acres, so there’s plenty of space to spread out. You’ll often spot wildlife around the place too, especially if you take a walk around the pond that’s next to the pitching area. If you’d like to enlist a bit of local help to up your chances of spotting some of the bigger beasts, you can arrange guided walks from the site to search for red deer nearby. There’s been a farm for several centuries (the place predates the Domesday Book) – and it’s as enticing a location as it’s ever been, in a secluded valley next to a 13th-century church and with a stream running alongside for paddles on hot days. As Exmoor is one of the UK’s Dark Sky Parks you can also expect some great stargazing by night. That’s not to say that this rural spot is tricky to get to, however – the A39 is less than a mile away, so you’ll be able to get out and about to explore Devon easily enough. As this is wild camping, facilities on site are fairly simple, stretching just to basic toilet facilities, running water and picnic tables. There’s a communal firepit and barbecue area, and barbecues in general are fine as long as they’re kept off the ground. At weekends, the 16th-century barn opens up to serve wood-fired pizzas and full English breakfasts (which you’ll need to order in advance). There’s a local pub five minutes’ drive away for family meals and takeaways.

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker, no cars)

Liked: Big fields, grass cut, loos are fine. Greeted on arrival. Reasonably priced. Not too far off the coast path for anyone walking/cycling - I did recommend it to someone.

Disliked: Inevitable bit of road noise given location - but that makes it easy to find as well, as well as a bit of activity from the bigger camp/caravan operation next door, and understandably some harvesting. Would be very exposed in wet weather as no covered area for campers to loiter - although that’s the same for the majority of sites.
