  • Wild camping field with Tamar Valley views on the edge of Dartmoor
  • A five-minute drive to Lydford Gorge and the Granite Way Cycle Track
  • Back-to-basics site close to a farm shop, vineyard and moorland hikes
Holdstrong Farmhouse is the clever choice for anyone who wants to go camping on the edge of Dartmoor National Park – but not on a formal campsite. And without the crowds. At this semi-wild meadow spot, there is plenty of room – nearly 16 acres in fact – for dogs and kids to play safely without bothering anyone else. This large field also brings you spectacular views over the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while Dartmoor (five minutes’ drive), its wild hiking, craggy tors and wild ponies, really is on the doorstep. There are a handful of National Trust stately piles to see too, as well as adventure parks offering fun rides for the kids. You can pick up local goodies for the barbecue from Lydford Farm Shop (five minutes) or head to the huge supermarket in Launceston (20 minutes) for major stocking up. You won’t be short of pubs and tea rooms in those winding Cornish lanes – and there’s also a winery (five minutes) where you can tour the vines and tuck into sampling the wares as well local cheese and charcuterie platters. And please remember this is pretty much wild camping, so although toilets and running water are available, there are no showers or washing-up facilities.

Liked Fairly civilised version of wild camping. Lovely open field to Camp. The loo was a bonus, and the dogs could roam freely around the tent.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Peaceful location, plenty of birdsong, and stunning views to Brentor and Dartmoor.

Disliked Toilet needs a good clear out and clean out.
Grass is extremely long and needs a pathway cut through it.
