  • Firewood and eggs to buy on site; local pub within walking distance
If a chilled-out stay at a laid-back site sounds up your street, make your way to Farleigh Camping in the Devon countryside. With the occasional swallow or skylark gliding overhead and views over Dartmoor (it’s a 15-minute drive for hiking and cycling in the national park), this is a wildlife haven with laidback vibes and a fab lack of traffic noise. And still, the site isn’t too far from the towns, as the busy bohemian centre of Totnes is a 15-minute drive away and Dartmouth is 20 minutes. Great sunsets or clear starry skies could be on the cards come evening time. In the day, head for buckets and spades at one of several beaches, including Bantham beach (25 minutes), Slapton Sands (20 minutes) or Blackpool Sands (20 minutes). There are plenty of friendly faces on site to point you in the direction of other less-visited bays or wild swimming in the River Avon (15 minutes). On site, there are basic but cool and clean facilities including toilets, showers and outdoor dishwashing facilities. There’s also a water point and a small but useful on-site food shop selling essentials such as firewood and eggs from the farm (subject to availability). Pick up what you need, then cosy up for an evening at the communal firepit or with your own barbecue. There is a country pub five minutes' walk away and more foodie haunts in Totnes (15 minutes), including cafés, pubs and independent shops. Plus, find riverside pubs where you can watch the paddleboarders glide by in Kingsbridge (15 minutes). Although there's no wifi on site here, most people can get decent 4G/5G mobile phone signal.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Peace and quiet. Relatively easy to find and very kind owners let us check in exceedingly late due to traffic. "Check in" was find a spot and enjoy. Really simple. Great local tips available. Would recommend the swim spots!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Not sure, it was a field with limited facilities. Steph was lovely as was her daughter.

Disliked: The style of compost toilet. There were two toilets, both deep holes on the ground with what looked like a toilet above. It was challenging for my children as was the very limited washing facilities. I booked last minute so perhaps was not clear on what I had signed us up too. Not the fault of the site but the weather was awful on our second to last night which confirmed that we needed to avoid another night.

From the manager: Hi Aiveen, I’m sorry that your children found things challenging. As described, it is a rustic camping site with basic facilities - a hot shower, three sinks and two compost toilets (this is a typical style of compost loo). The bonuses are that it is a beautiful natural, quiet site only used for a few weeks a year, with fantastic views of Dartmoor, dark night skies and not far to towns, beaches and the moor! It was unfortunate that the windy, wet weather made things more difficult during your stay and I hope you haven’t been put off camping in the future.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay at farleigh, we love to camp and small quiet campsites where we can have a fire and the dogs can relax without being on top of other campers. The facilities are great, clean compost loos and a lovely hot shower.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely quiet location, and exactly as advertised, hosts were helpful and pleasant. The owners young daughter did a lovely job of welcoming me. Facilities were very clean and in very good condition. No light pollution so views of the night sky were amazing.

Disliked: Some of the pitches can be a bit more exposed and windy in bad weather, but I was there in September so to be expected and I did have the option to move to a more sheltered spot. I extended my stay so it wasnt anything that put me off, just worth noting when you choose your pitch if the forecast isnt great

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location was just a mile from the pub, and it was a good pub for food and drink.

Disliked: Unfortunately the showers were temperamental and we did not end up using them as they were not working when we were ready to use them. The small roads around the site were very busy so not great to walk on without getting involved in traffic. For a remote location that was a shame.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review. Unfortunately there was a small glitch with the shower, which was an error not caused by us, and we did let you know as soon as it was fixed (within 10 minutes). I’m sorry this affected your stay. In the summer months this is a fairly busy part of Devon and I’m sorry the lanes weren’t as quiet as you had hoped.
