  • Family-run site with sea views and direct access to Broadsands beach
  • A 10-minute drive to Ilfracombe; 25 minutes to Woolacombe beach
  • On-site shop with maps available; access to the South West Coast Path
Everyone in… it’s time for a beach break on the edge of Exmoor National Park. In one direction, Watermouth Valley Camping Park has direct access to the steps that go down the cliff and onto Broadsands beach. In the other direction, a five-minute walk will get you to Watermouth Bay, where there’s fabulous rock fishing, good launching facilities and spectacular coastal walks. That’s not all, believe it or not. The Victorian town of Ilfracombe is 10 minutes’ drive away and surfing beaches such as Woolacombe beach (25 minutes’ drive) and Croyde beach (35 minutes) are also within driving distance. Further on, characterful Lynton and Lynmouth (half an hour) can be found too. Of course, the site is right on the South West Coast Path around North Devon, so it’s a very wise base for hiking fans (just pick up a map of the local area from the site’s shop). What about Watermouth Valley Camping Park itself? Well, the family-run, dog-friendly site has sea views and a sheltered valley where guests can relax and take in the scenery. There’s a children’s adventure playground for kids to let off steam, a handy on-site shop and a modern, clean amenities block with hot showers and electric points for hair dryers, straighteners and razors. The site gets very popular with families during the school summer holidays (May through to September), but at other times, it’s quiet and peaceful and attracts couples and solo travellers.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Just Wow !!!! What a beautiful site!!! Very clean and picturesque site. Had great sized pitches, that were nicely separated. The top of the site overlooks the sea which had stunning views over the bays. The toilet’s and shower rooms were very clean and there were 3 blocks. The shop was pretty good too, selling local burgers and sausages for BBQ’s etc. Great Launderette and dish washing facilities. Staff very friendly and helpful. A walk to a Pub through the site. A great little bar which had Pizza and curry night. Owning a dog there was an absolute pleasure with the fantastic dog field at the top which was massive!! Over looking the sea and the bays and the site had its own beach further down the coastal path. The steps were quite steep ….. so don’t carry too much !!!! All in all couldn’t recommend enough this site an absolute 5 star site at very desirable prices compared to others.

Disliked: Nothing !!!!

Allocated primitive grass tent or campervan campsite (sea view)

Liked: Our 1st time camping so nothing to compare but great little site. We pitched up in D3 for the views but we chose the windiest week of the year so in hindsight probably not the most ideal spot, go down in the valley if wind is forecast! Lesson learned. We only used the shower block opposite the goats/sheep - clean, always one available (we was the last week of opening) & plenty of hot water. Hairdryers available to use, hand soap for the sinks & toilet paper in each cubicle. We rented a fire pit which was interesting in gale force winds but we had promised a toddler toasted marshmallows! On site they had a play park (for older children) and then a small area with a few toddler play pieces in. There was an open fronted area with mini pool table & a couple of football tables. Broadsands is down 200 or so fairly treacherous steps so we didn’t risk it with our 3 year old. It unfortunately didn’t look like the photos online as it was a pretty miserable day (of course not campsites’ fault :) - but still a worth a little explore without small children I’d say. Not really a ‘pack the bucket & spade’ type beach. Combe Martin beach 4min drive away is great for exactly this! Visited twice - once in the rain & once in glorious sun. Excellent walks around some caves and rock pools, fun exploring for fish & crabs for little ones. We cooked 2 nights & went to Sawmills pub (5min walk through the site) for 2 nights. Lovely pub, would be great to sit outside in the summer, cute deck. Huge portions! Delicious food. We walked to Watermouth Harbour (small) in about 20mins (with toddler legs in tow), cute tea room there where we got some brownies to go. Went over to Watermouth Castle for the afternoon - great fun for little ones (I’d say older than 5/6 they’d be bored).

Disliked: The day before we were due to arrive they changed their website to say the on site food & bar were to be closed the week we were there. I only knew this because I wanted to remind myself of the themed nights. This didn’t really affect our stay, but I was disappointed as the menus looked delicious and was excited to try. I get that it probably doesn’t make sense to open them if super quiet.

Liked: Efficient book in. Very clean and tidy site. Friendly staff. Bus stop right outside plus a friendly pub right next to site. We stayed on their last week of opening. We noticed that they had catered with games tables etc for the younger members. Shop was well stocked as well. They also have a bar which is open on a Friday and a Saturday.

Disliked: Knew the site was not on level ground but even with our ramps we were still not level. We managed, WIFI not brilliant.

Local attractions

Time to tick off the North Devon coves and harbours? Start with splendid Combe Martin (five minutes’ drive), a seaside resort with a sheltered cove for peaceful days on the sand. Surfers might want to slide on over to Saunton Sands (half an hour), while those seeking scenic clifftop hikes will get on well with the Valley of Rocks’ (35 minutes) wild goats and sea views. Take off on a fishing trip or a sea safari from Ilfracombe Harbour (10 minutes). Lundy Island is one of the most popular tour spots for such boat trips. There’s a working lifeboat station in the harbour too if that sort of stuff entertains you. Once you’ve checked out the lifeboats, turn back time a little with a trip to Arlington Court (20 minutes), a National Trust site with a Regency house and a carriage museum. Or perhaps all the way back to the time of dinosaurs? Kids are likely to love the life-sized dino models at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes) and its zoo and fossil museum.
