  • Smart family-run park within Woodbury Common
  • Easy drive into Exeter
  • Excellent facilities including bar, bistro and play area
They say an Englishman’s (motor)home is his castle – so when choosing where to brake, you’ll want a spot fit for a king. Castle Brake Holiday Park in east Devon should pass muster: it’s a smart, family-run park within the heathland of Woodbury Common, ideally placed for an invasion of Exeter and the sought-after sands of the Jurassic Coast. The facilities are splendid: a spotless, cedar-clad amenities block with underfloor heating and family bathrooms; a laundry room; the Castle Inn bar and restaurant for homemade nosh using local ingredients (takeaways are also available); a play area; and ample space for a peaceful stroll and a bit of wildlife spotting. (Please note that the bar and restaurant are not open every evening during low season.) Castle Brake Holiday Park is within half an hour's walk of the village of Woodbury, which has a handful of good pubs and shops, or it’s an easy ride into Exeter for anything else you might need.

Liked: site is very clean and staff helpfull, pitches are level shower and toilets are a bit of a walk if your up near the entrance (which we were) also club bar/restaurant is small and for the size of the site with well over 100 statics i would not like to be here in the height of the season, nice walk to the local village woodbury, we would return but out of season dates

Disliked: small bar/restaurant area but then it does have one

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: We had a good week here. The site was nice, quiet and clean sitea mixture of touring and statics. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Food and drinks lovely in the site bar we enjoyed the quiz night even though we came last! Very well placed for getting out and visiting places around south Devon.

Disliked: Our only gripe was with the toilet/shower block which wasn't that clean and had the most awful smell of dirty drains/ sewage which was most unpleasant. I did report this to reception but they didn't seem too interested and there didn't appear to be any improvement. Hence we mostly used our own facilities and the toilet by the bar which was clean. We discovered a large skip full of rubbish behind the toilet block which might account for some of the smell. In our opinion this was the only thing that let the site down.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Underfloor heating in showers Lovely helpful staff Great games field Brilliant location Quiet site Can use facilities at sister site, Ladram Bay Great children’s play area Well stocked shop Pub on site

Disliked: Strong sewage smell everywhere Dirty toilets and showers and washing up area. Everywhere needed a good sweep up Camping field too small, tents too close together Games room was a joke - pool table with no white ball and cues with no tips, one kiddy ride, 3 out of 5 grabber machines out of order and it was filthy Coffee machine out of order

Liked: Staff were soo friendly and welcoming. Site was exceptionally clean and tidy, very well maintained BBQ pig pizza was the absolute best ever Super quiet location Shower toilet block was a good set up nice and spacious

Disliked: Only downside was shower floors were sometimes a bit grubby but only from other users not squeejing after they used them

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Another perfect ten score, thank you so much, we are very grateful for your feedback, and are thrilled that you found our site to be well maintained with friendly staff. The BBQ pizza is a firm favourite with us all, and will definitely be staying on the Pizza menu for next year!! We look forward to your next visit and hope it will be real soon. Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Like other reviews have mentioned, there is a sister site called Ladram Bay that the car pass lets you visit. Here there is soft play, a large adventure playground, an outdoor splash park, indoor swimming pool, mini golf and a private beach. You have to pay for the swimming as a camper, which is fair enough but worth knowing. The facilities at the sister site are great and look quite new. It's much larger and busier. The private beach has great rock pools at low tide. We ate at both the restaurant at Castle Brake and at the sister site. Both meals were great. The meal at Ladram Bay we were sat right on the balcony with a sea view that was amazing. Toilets on site were clean. Booking through here we had 'classic camping' which meant we didn't have a specific pitch number and could go anywhere in a large field. The field wasn't busy and everyone was quite spaced out. Play park at castle brake was good, although more tired that at Ladram.

Disliked: Not a dislike per say, but with the swimming at Ladram you need to be ready to dive straight in and go right on the 15 mins slots. Our hour session ended when we'd only been in the pool 45 mins. Every 15 mins they dish out different coloured bands. Water ran out while we were staying, but only on some taps, which was confusing. The restaurant did cope though and gave us a meal.

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us your review and comments regarding your camping holiday with us. We are very pleased you had a great stay with your young kids. It certainly sounds like you made the most of the access to our sister site Ladram Bay, where all of our guests are made very welcome. Thank you for recommending us to your friends and we do hope that you choose to return very soon. Kind Regards The Castle Brake Team

Orchard camping pod (no pets)

Liked: The site was lovely and clean, very well managed and secure. Small shop on site for basics, priced accordingly, £2 for a bottle of robinsons juice. Nice hot showers with plenty of water. We stayed in a standard pod, number 4 if memory serves me right. Good solid bed and table, nice clean working fridge, also it has a small freezer in top, so great for people who enjoy ice cream.

Disliked: Small problem with water on site, it was milky, I was not notified about this. Games room, no white cue ball for pool table, £1 lost in finding out. The other "games" are grabbing claws with toys/sweets.
