Local attractions

Sometimes you just need a quick stopover – but it’s certainly worth sticking around at Herons Bank for a little longer if you can. For starters, it’s close to several places to entertain the kids – including the excellent Diggerland Devon (five minutes’ drive), Yarak Birds of Prey (10 minutes) and Devon Railway Centre (20 minutes). Kids (and grownups) are also likely to like beach days in Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton (both about 35 minutes) or a stroll around Exeter (25 minutes), perhaps including a tour of the underground passages and a visit to the cathedral (where family events and activities are available throughout the year). For a more grown-up day out, you may prefer a tour of the stately home and gardens at Knightshayes Court (20 minutes) or a hike through Exmoor National Park (40 minutes) before a tour and tipple at Wellhayes Vineyard (25 minutes).
