  • Quiet adults-only wild camping on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • Great base for ramblers, climbers, outdoor pursuits and cyclists
  • Spacious grass pitches surrounded by woodland; dogs are welcome
Giving a rare chance for people to wild camp on Dartmoor, Five Wyches Farm Camping is a peaceful, family-run site right on the edge of the national park, surrounded by fields and trees and with an abundance of wildlife to look out for. There's plenty of space to choose from, and it's up to you whether you'd like to pitch close to other guests or tuck yourselves away in a solitary corner of the meadow or woodland. This place is also for adults only and teenagers aged 15 or over. This Devon spot is a handy base for walkers, cyclists and climbers keen to face new outdoor challenges, and there’s plenty of grassy space on site where you can chill out afterwards. Pets can join in the fun too, as there is a separate fenced-in field for dogs to have some off-lead runs. Firepits are available for alfresco cooking adventures or just a campfire – logs, kindling and firelighters can all be supplied if required. It's a short walk to the town, which hosts a number of bijou shops, cafés and restaurants, and for those who like a pint or two, there are a number of pubs. The town also has a number of small supermarkets (five minutes' drive) where you can pick up barbecue goodies and other camping essentials. For those who prefer a quiet evening in camp, the lack of light pollution often means dark starry skies – and occasionally a shooting star or two. Simple eco-friendly amenities include fresh water, long-drop compost toilets and a hot outdoor shower. Recycling is actively encouraged, and there are facilities for chemical toilets and grey waste water.

Liked: Really good experience from start to finish. Contacted Mel to ask if our motorhome would fit, and request a late arrival. Received a text on the day of arrival with instructions for the gate, and pitch number. Mel was on site when we got there and was very welcoming. Lovely quiet site, very pretty, quaint. We’ll be back! Thanks Mel!

Disliked: The signage for the site was a little hard to spot, but it is in keeping with the style of the site

Liked: Ideal site for us in a motorhome. Toilet and shower facilities are basic (this is made clear on the website) but we did not need them. The site provided everything that we needed at a reasonable price. The site was quiet and peaceful and an ideal location for exploring Devon.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Dog exercise field, digging opportunities in molehills for a frantic dog, Romany caravan because of rain, local National Trust walk, warm shower, clean facilities for water and waste. Mel and Keith were available and explained how everything worked.

Disliked: We lost a dog lead because we let her off and took photos as she frisked around.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Fab adult only site. Short walk into the town centre. The shower is a nice added bonus.

Disliked: Not really a dislike, more for information if you walk into the town. The road initially into the town has no pavement, and cars do pass fast and close.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: No children allowed.Could pitch where you wanted and quiet.

Disliked: Long drop toilets have used this before without complaint these although very clean stunk, and I do think that the open top shower should at least have a door.If you have your own facilities this site is fine.

Local attractions

All you active types can dash off into Dartmoor National Park for outdoor adventures scrambling up rocky tors and seeking out medieval ruins, walking or cycling the Templar Way and walking to ancient relics including the prehistoric standing stones at Scorhill Stone Circle (35 minutes’ drive).  The Natural Trust’s Parke is adjacent to the Five Wyches for a walk along the banks of the River Bovey. You can also take bikes out along the old railway track that forms part of the Wray Valley Trail as part of your visit, or just explore the splendid gardens within its grounds. If your schedule is taking you towards the coast, the nearest beach at Teignmouth is backed by seafood cafés, and you can have a go on the amusements along the 19th-century pier. The sand at Ness Cove is a quieter option where dogs are welcome all year around. Both are about 25 minutes' drive away. Hit a rainy day? There are plenty of indoor attractions in this area, including Jolly Roger’s Lifesize Models (15 minutes' walk), House of Marbles (three minutes' drive) and the Trago Mills indoor shopping experience (10 minutes).
