  • CAMC members-only site on a farm on the eastern fringes of Dartmoor
  • Bovey Tracey five minutes’ drive; Teignmouth 25 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; large pitches with electric hook-up; barbecues
On the eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park, surrounded by Devon’s gently hilly landscape, Dunley Certificated Location is a family-friendly site that opens its doors only to members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club. It sits on a working farm with cows, sheep and pigs, but that doesn’t mean your canine companion isn’t allowed here: good dogs are welcome (but do keep them on a lead around the farm animals). You’ll set up on a one-acre field with a slight slope, and all pitches (which are part-hardstanding, part-grass) are fitted with electric hook-ups, plus plenty of space for awnings and privacy. You might get the occasional fragrant waft from another guest’s barbecue, though (and they from yours…). If that gets your appetite going, head to Bovey Tracey (five minutes’ drive), where there are a couple of small supermarkets, as well as a handful of restaurants, takeaway joints and pubs. Back on site, take a breather and gaze at the views across the fields, spotting owls as they go about their nightly hunts. The stargazing is pretty decent on site, though for the best night skies you might want to drive to Haytor (15 minutes), on Dartmoor. Besides hiking in places like Shaptor Woods (five minutes) or Haldon Forest Park - Forestry England (15 minutes), pursuits include golfing (with two courses within a 10-minute drive) and watersports. A café on Maidencombe Beach (25 minutes) rents out canoes and paddleboards. Amenities on site include a toilet block with showers, water hook-ups, recycling points and chemical disposal facilities.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite (members only)

Liked: Very pleasant & friendly owners/staff, nice and quiet. Small site so doesn’t get overcrowded.

Disliked: My stay should have cost me £20 with electric hook up. Due to confusion when elderly lady took remaining payment on arrival and not offering my change. I ended paying £23 as she did not subtract my deposit and did not seem to understand when I explained. So make sure you have correct sum on you. On top of this we did not get electric hook up as their box had tripped, not working, only her nephew could sort who was not back to the following day, once we had departed. We were not offered any sort of reimbursement so an expensive night for a field with a basic toilet. I am sure if others were around on site/farm we may not have the same experience.

From the manager: Sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay I have sent your £20.00 back to you as reimbursement. Thanks Karen

Liked: So peaceful!
Field is on a hill so may need levellers. Nice view over fields. Heard tawny owls. It’s quiet. Lots of place to play.

Local attractions

On Dartmoor, Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park (15 minutes’ drive) spreads around a dramatic 70-foot high waterfall thundering down past moss-covered boulders. Three circular walks take you through the woodland and near the water, and there are also meet-the-animals experiences where the kids can handle meerkats and reptiles. The Grand Pier in Teignmouth (25 minutes) was built in the 1860s and is lined with food stalls and amusement arcades. It also has gorgeous views of the coastline. Take the South West Coast Path, which runs through the town, to the viewing platform at the northern end of the beach, then stroll through leafy Mules Park. Powderham Castle (25 minutes) is a 14th-century structure that has been altered through the centuries, with Tudor, Georgian and Victorian additions. Walk through its halls, admiring the collection of art and furniture, then explore the splendid gardens, which stretch all the way to the River Exe.
