If you go down to the woods today… make it Witherdon Wood Shepherd's Hut, in Beaworthy, Devon, for a peaceful grownups-only stay in impressive surroundings (the grounds of the gamekeeper's cottage for Witherdon manor house, to be precise). The owners have pulled out all the stops to make your stay a comfortable one – you’ll arrive to a collection of fresh local ingredients (all the bits for a full English breakfast are provided, with fresh local produce, fresh coffee and fresh juice) so you can whip up a cuppa in no time, and brekkie the next morning too. Perch at the breakfast bar while you tuck in for a fine way to appreciate your peaceful surroundings… while you do, keep an eye out for deer moving through the woodland or grazing in the field next to you. Days are easily spent pottering around the site – the well-equipped hut has a Bluetooth radio, books and games to pass the hours, and the log burner will keep you toasty when the weather isn’t up to much. Outside, there's a covered decking area with seating, a barbecue, a firepit and a hot tub for alfresco evenings (this area is a stargazing hotspot, so be on the lookout for shooting stars). The hut comes with the luxury of an ensuite shower room too, with handmade eco-friendly toiletries (in keeping with the site's general eco-conscious vibe that favours things like solar power and plastic-free tea bags). If you can tear yourself away, spend your days covering the local walking and cycling paths, or rent canoes and kayaks for adventures on Roadford Lake (10 minutes away), which is also a fine choice for fishing.

Liked: Such a lovely stay. I couldn't fault this at all. Easy to follow instructions on how to get there sent to you by the host. It's in then sticks a little but it's perfect for star watching and just being in nature. The host has put together a very helpful guide of surrounding walks and places of interest as well as a how to guide on the shepherd's hut. Breakfast items, tea, coffee pretty much everything and the kitchen sink,provided for you. Even down to toiletry stuff. Limited to no phone signal so really good if you want to disconnect and just be with nature. There is a very friendly cat and some chickens which were lovely additions to the hut. Everything was really clean. Very well decorated. I loved the homey feel of the whole place. It is backed onto the hosts house but it's so well structured that you wouldn't even notice. Beautiful setting ambient fairy lights and a hot tub made for a great escape into the woods holiday. I loved this shepherd's hut as a short stay holiday. Will definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing. Couldn't fault this experience at all.

Liked: What an amazing space to disconnect with everything and just relax and enjoy all the little details that made us wish to be there every weekend!
Well equipped inside, nice private space outside with a cherry on top (hot tub).

Liked: Excellent hut. clean, tidy, very welcoming - very thoughtful touches and additional treats left. Well equipped with basics and additional luxury touches. Great BBQ and hot-tub, and fire pit too. Everything we needed for our short visit, but further supplies available if needed which was great.
Breakfast supplies were provided and a range of toiletries too, robes and towels for hot tub, candles. binoculars and a great bird book, maps, games for wet days, radio.
Outlook onto woodlands, very private and lots of wildlife - birds, deer, dragonflies etc, private and secluded. Owners had great communication but left us to enjoy the seclusion.
A real get-away-from-it-all, so peaceful and quiet, great place to just 'be' and let the the stresses ebb away.
Had a visit from the cat and the dog which was lovely.
Easy to get to, great directions sent ahead of the visit, not far off A30

Liked: Everything, a perfect restful treat, Hut and facilities were great, everything you need and more, lovely Gluten Free breakfast pack and extra treats.

Liked: Nothing to dislike. Was left to our own devices the whole stay. Well equipped with everything we needed. Hosts were only a doorbell or call away if anything was required. All information to hand. Perfect chilled and beautiful location, unfortunately the weather was against us to appreciate it fully

Disliked: The weather putting a dampner on things so didn't explore as much as we'd liked

Liked: Site was peaceful and quiet. Everything you needed was provided in the hut, plus complimentary extras was a great touch. Loved the log fire, hut was cosy and warm. Hot tub was great and relaxing. On a clear night, would be lovely to see the stars.

Liked: Amazing stay at Witherdon Wood Shepards Hut. Such a beautiful and tranquil place surrounded by lovely nature. The hut is well equipped with everything you need and the hot tub is amazing! Ingredients for a cooked breakfast is supplied which is very handy! The owners are lovely and nothing is too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.

As this is an adults-only place, why not indulge in some over-18s days out? There are a few vineyards dotted around nearby for tours and tastings – Carey Valley Wines (10 minutes' drive), Alder Vineyard (20 minutes) and Torview Winery & Vineyard (25 minutes) are all worth a look. There are also cider producers to visit if you’re more apples than grapes – try Countryman Cider (half an hour), The Cider Vat (35 minutes) and Sam’s Cider (40 minutes). For scenic trails and wildlife spotting, Dartmoor National Park (25 minutes) can be explored in a number of ways – how about horse riding on the open moor or climbing the granite tors? Or visit the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (35 minutes), where you can take the Tamar Valley Line train or Tamar Passenger Ferry to see the sights. Fancy a bit of sand under your feet instead (and maybe a paddle in the sea)? Take advantage of your proximity to Cornwall and cross the border for some of the county’s famous beaches.
