In need of some alpaca TLC? Fortunately you don’t have to travel to the Andes to walk and talk with these furry beasts; instead just bag your exclusive pitch at Beamsworthy Alpacas, a peaceful, leafy and adults-only pop-up site on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from Beaworthy in Devon. What’s even more amazing about this place is that you and your party get to stay overnight right next to the alpaca paddock; great therapy for anyone looking to unbolt from the stresses of daily life.
Alpaca experiences with the herd, which began with ladies Enid and Sylvia in 2016, include trekking on woodland walks or meet-and-greets followed by a traditional Devon cream tea. There’s also all manner of soft, woolly alpaca-made gloves, scarfs, socks and toys in the gift shop if you’d like to take away a souvenir of your visit.
Based on a third-generation working family farm, the campsite offers simple amenities in the farmyard, plus the use of a barbecue, a camping stove for conjuring up simple meals and a marquee with picnic benches in which to enjoy them. Knives, forks and plates are provided, along with hot water for making that all-important morning cup of tea and coffee – and if you don’t fancy the self-catering malarkey, there’s a pub about 10 minutes’ drive away.
