Live the American dream. In the wilds of north Devon. Airstream Glamping have a brilliant site for their 34-foot long retro van: guests love stepping out and running through the morning dew in the meadow and the kids generally make a beeline for the tree swing. The ancient wood at the back is home to owls and pheasants and deer occasionally wander past... it's worth bringing a telescope if you can too as the night skies are remarkable over Dartmoor. The van has an alternative existence as a film pro[p (you might have spotted it on the big screen) and can sleep up to six people (visitors mention how comfy the beds are and how easy it is to use). It has a bathroom with a hot shower; fresh towels and linen supplied, and a picnic area with firepit and barbecue outside. Shebbear has a well-stocked shop and an historic pub (with grub and a ghost), 10 minutes' drive away.

Local attractions

The proprietors are very happy to share their local walks and bike trails, such as Meeth (10 minutes' drive away), the starting point for the Tarka Trail, 32 miles of cycle path following the otter's journey in Henry Williamson's famed novel. The Hartland Heritage Coast (40 minutes) is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where a network of routes meander through coastal landscapes home to lots of wildlife. Bude (26 minutes) is a popular spot for surfers and has kit hire and surf lessons. It's a similar distance to Bideford, where sightseers can also catch the boat to Lundy Island to spot seals, snorkel their way round the protected marine reserve or walk round four millennia of history. Longer sea trips from Exmouth (an hour away) can be sorted for fishing or to see dolphins and puffins.
