  • Off-grid CAMC-only site with stunning views to Hartland Point in Devon
  • Exmoor National Moor five minutes’ drive; Woolacombe half an hour
  • Farm animals on site; pubs and restaurants within 15 minutes’ drive
With far-reaching views over Devon hills to Hartland Point, Arkadia Farm Certificated Location is set on the outskirts of the village of Bratton Fleming near the edge of Exmoor National Park. Only open to Caravan and Motorhome Club members, it is an easily accessible off-grid and back-to-basics site for tourers, with its list of facilities including mains water, recycling bins and a green chemical toilet emptying point. Once settled at Arkadia, you can meet the small herd of Royal Golden Guernsey goats and the Wiltshire Horn sheep along with free-range geese and hens. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on leads due to the livestock; they can have a rare old time off site though, with dog-friendly beaches like Woolacombe around half an hour’s drive away, and a secure dog-walking field for hire 10 minutes away in the car. Close to this peaceful spot is a shop in Bratton Fleming (five minutes’ drive) selling the essentials. Also in the village, woodfired pizzas are available on Wednesdays, or fish and chips on Friday. There’s also a choice of pubs and restaurants in villages like Goodleigh and Challacombe (both about 10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

If you’re heading for Devon beaches, Woolacombe (half an hour’s drive) is a wide sweep of sand with masses of space for running around, rockpools to explore and dunes to climb. It’s also popular with surfers, as is Croyde Beach (45 minutes). It’s 15 minutes by car to the sand-and-pebble beaches of Coombe Martin, while Ilfracombe (25 minutes) has beaches accessed through rock tunnels as well as a busy harbour, a summertime fair and a small aquarium. Active bods can join the South West Coast Path at the Victorian seaside town of Lynton (25 minutes) and hike to the Valley of the Rocks with its bizarre rock formations and herd of feral goats. The Tarka Trail (10 minutes) follows a disused railway line between Barnstaple and Bideford, and is open for walking and cycling expeditions; there are numerous walking, cycling, horse riding and climbing options in Exmoor National Moor (five minutes) – keep an eye out for native ponies while you’re there. For a look at local heritage, National Trust-owned Arlington Court (15 minutes) has a carriage museum and an elegant Regency interior. The traditional fishing village of Clovelly (55 minutes) is good for a potter around its photogenic cobbles lined with arty shops, and you can read up on local history in the compact museum.
