Thistle Lodge Retreat is a true organic stay – peaceful and simple, without the glitz and glamour. This off-grid site is part of a working alpaca and equestrian farm in the Cornish countryside, so it’s very rural-feeling (and with the scenery to go along with it). Here, off-grid living is the norm – as is sipping on a glass of your favourite red, rosé or white while the alpacas bounce around before sunset. Hosted by Vivien and Pat, you’ll have a warm welcome and friendly faces to ask about the local hotspots. This may include Looe’s fishing harbour 25 minutes’ drive away or Liskeard 10 minutes’ drive away, a market town where you’ll be best off finding any supplies. For other Cornwall attractions, the A38 and the A30 are a short drive away. Homely’s the feel here, as there’s plenty of peace and quiet after your day out. Whether it’s the rural scenery, keeping a watchful eye on the alpacas’ antics or stargazing by night, there are many ways to unwind. Perhaps a barbecue too, as they’re permitted? Simple are the facilities on site, which includes portable toilets for convenience. Those of you looking for somewhere to eat out will find a fair few holes in Liskeard or there’s the novel smugglers’ pub, Jamaica Inn, half an hour’s drive away.
