  • Peaceful farm site within 25 minutes' drive of handfuls of beaches
  • Central Cornwall location, 10 minutes' drive from Porthtowan beach
  • Wood-fired hot tub available to hire; dog-friendly; barbecues welcome
Are you eyeing up the lush countryside and beaches of Cornwall? Whisk yourself away to Primrose Farm Holidays. Set on a peaceful farm in the centre of Cornwall, not only is it a short drive away from a huge variety of Cornwall attractions – it's also within 25 minutes' drive of handfuls of beaches with gorgeous sand, surf and stunning views. Family-run and family-friendly, Primrose Farm Holidays is a short drive from the A30 road and surrounded by glorious countryside. The quiet farm is in the small village of Penstraze in the west of Cornwall, making Porthtowan one of its closest beaches (around a 10-minute drive). The location makes for a ‘best of both worlds’-type scenario. It should take you no time at all to settle into the relaxed rural setting, and you are welcome to bring your well-behaved dog for the ultimate family holiday. Barbecues and firepits are allowed, or you can spend an evening of luxury soaking in the wood-fired hot tub (book in advance; extra charges apply). Generous grassy pitches have easy access to the on-site amenities, which include toilet and shower blocks, a water supply and laundry facilities (available at an extra charge). If you plan on cooking, there is a small fridge (with a freezer compartment for chilling ice packs), plus a veg prep and washing-up area. There is a café/tearoom within a 15-minute walk. The nearest pubs and shops are in Chacewater (five minutes' drive) or Threemilestone (also five minutes), while the larger town of Truro can be reached in just under a quarter of an hour.

Fantastic, well-managed campsite with welcoming owners. Guests loved the clean, modern facilities, great showers, and central Cornwall location. Peaceful & family-friendly with movie nights & a good shop. Mostly good pitches, though some noted road noise and minor pitch issues. Highly recommended.

FHU grass campsite

Liked We absolutely loved the site it was exactly what we were looking for. Very quiet with lovely open space outside of the tent for children to play. We stayed in the second field (not the one with the shop). Great location perfect to access lots of lovely places in Cornwall such as Perranporth, Newquay, St Ives and Padstow, and also close to Truro town centre.

We had a corner pitch which was bigger than others which was perfect for us. The electric hook up was further away than what we are used to but Stephen loaned us a cable.

Disliked Our field and pitch was one of the closest to the road, and it could sometimes be loud during the night but we didn’t struggle to sleep. We would possibly ask to have the opposite corner of the field next time so we are further away from the road.

Liked The clover tent was very clean and spacious. Staff were friendly and helpful. Facilities were very clean and no ques for showers etc.
Outdoor movie night was a great idea for the children.

Disliked Outdoor kitchen on the clover tent as the wind was high but this is no fault of primrose farm

FHU grass campsite

Liked Good site with pitches clearly set out. No issues with noise or disturbance.
Good bathroom facilities with hot showers.
The site has a morning cafe offering pastries and a bar selling real ales until 10.30pm.
They allow fires and bbqs, which is great.
It’s not on the beach but is close to Truro and all its facilities, and it is convenient to visit lots of places on both the north and south Cornwall coast.

Disliked The only real point is that checkout is early, by 10.30, although this doesn’t seem to be too strictly enforced to give a bit of leeway.
There was a bit of noise from the nearby road at night but I only noticed it on the first night. It certainly wasn’t loud enough to be a problem.

FHU grass campsite

Liked What a great find! We searched a lot of camp sites in this area and so glad we went with this one. A great family friendly vibe. Nice and spacious pitches, with a big area for the kids to play and enjoy themselves. Very relaxed site, and quiet in the evenings. Facilities were great, we only ever used the older facilities that were clean, with nice powerful showers, we were advised that the newer shower blocks were more spacious. Great location for exploring. Highly recommend and we will be back.

Local attractions

When it’s time to hit Cornwall’s famed beaches, sandy Porthtowan and Perranporth are only a 10-minute drive away. The former is popular with windsurfers and rockpool enthusiasts, while the latter is home to the clear waters of the Chapel Rock tidal pool. There are handfuls of beaches within a 25-minute drive of the farm, so it's up to you to decide between the likes of Newquay (25 minutes' drive), Upton Towans (20 minutes), Portreath (20 minutes) and Saint Agnes (15 minutes). Blackwater’s ATV Centre (five minutes' drive) has circuits for all ages and abilities, plus coaches showing you how to negotiate gradients and jumps. All the equipment is provided, from helmets and knee pads to coveralls, so you don’t have to worry about returning to the site covered in mud. For gentler activities, including a climbing wall, archery and a huge soft-play area, head to Base Camp, at Portreath (15 minutes). Truro (15 minutes) has a Gothic Revival cathedral, the Royal Cornwall Museum and heaps of green areas, such as Victoria Gardens, with a bandstand and shaded benches. Cool activities for kids include a skate park and the Celtic Tossers Axe Throwing centre.
