  • Attractive park in meadows and woodland, family-run for generations
  • Stream and lake on site for angling: land fish of up to 28lb
  • Takeaway and bar available in high season
Ever been to one of those parks which have been run by the same family for generations and those who have been welcoming guests for decades? If not, it's time you did… such as to Pensagillas Park, near Cornwall’s St Austell, which has been run by the Kent family for six generations to provide a pristine place for pitching up. Pensagillas has had guests staying here since 1970; it’s all looked after and laid out to be tidy and attractive, with trees, hedging, shrubs and a tarmac roadway connecting the grass meadows. The pitches are in a five-acre field at the end of a private drive, with Cornish countryside views all around. And bring your rod: there’s an old mill with stream on site for contemplative casting off (and/or picnics), along with a two and a half acre coarse fishing lake at the bottom of a steep hill to land roach, tench, golden rudd and carp of up to 28lb (note that fishing is for an additional fee, paid for at reception). Pensagillas Park is a working farm, and you can buy the site's own free-range pork, sausages, chops and eggs in the on-site shop. During high season, there’s a takeaway and a cosy bar serving beer and cider, with more tipples and food available in the local village a couple of miles away.

Outer Meadow powered grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Perfect few days away. Staff were polite and friendly from greeting to departure. All facilities were lovely and clean and well maintained. It was lovely having a hot shower available. My partner and our boys loved the fishing lake, and all of our children enjoyed riding their bikes and playing games in the meadow. Beautiful views, so calm and quiet to wake up to in the morning. We cannot wait to come back 😍

Orchard Meadow powered grass campsite

Liked: We loved

Disliked: We loved the friendly welcome. The site was immaculate. The food was great and so convenient at the end of a day out exploring to know food was cooked to order. The children played all evening around the pitches and had great fun. We are thinking of returning next year and having a longer stay so that our family can use the caravan at various times in the summer holidays. Highly recommended.

Liked: Clean showers apart from that nothing.

Disliked: If you have kids I wouldn’t go. The lady (Owner I think) was very rude. Shouting at my daughter to get out the toilets because she thought she was a boy, didn’t even apologise! First night it was bad raining so struggled with tent, put a order in at 8.45 as cafe closes at 9 for her to have a moan and made us feel bad, people should be made aware of time for last orders. Shouted at my lad for collecting sticks from the trees called his stupid! If I wasn’t staying on the site with the rest of my family I would of came home early. There was another family who had the same issues. Should be adults only if she had that much of a problem with kids.

Pond Meadow powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: What an amazing campsite! There was everything to like. From arriving - David was so friendly and welcoming, explaining everything we needed to know and took us to our pitch. The pitch - we have a huge tent and there was ample space for it and a car. The showers and toilets were clean and were cleaned every morning. The Bar - excellent beers - Korev is outstanding! Lovely indoor and outdoor bar area - dog friendly and Katya is a great landlady! Fishing - such a lovely lake - could do with more pegs to fish - but our visit there was no issues with wanting to fish where you wanted to. So big carp in there and some lovely Rudd, Roach and Bream - and an eel! Word of caution - wear your sun cream - its a serious sun trap - but on the whole a very peaceful and wonderful space to enjoy mother nature. Overall a wonderful camp site - quite, clean, spacious and ever so well maintained - close to Mevagissey with some awesome roads to navigate. I am a single parent with an 11 year old and it was soooooo easy. I would recommend this site every day of the week. The team are also so well informed of everything Cornwall and made some great recommendations...stop thinking and get booking!!!! Oh - and the Wifi is super strength - even at the lake!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing.

Orchard Meadow powered grass campsite

Liked: The showers are free. Nice little shop on site Not too busy in the showers in the morning. Was near the toilets and showers so was a bonus. It was a quiet area. But scary on the roads as they are country roads and a long thin one to the campsite itself. Pitches are large so plenty of room to park large car and tent side by side. No signal but the WiFi was great didn't need a password.

Disliked: The ladies had a broken shower and you had to keep pressing the button or it would go off every 5 second. People wouldn't flush the toilets after themselves so would often had to flush before going. The electric kept cutting out.

Lake view meadow powered grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: We stayed for 2 nights at this beautiful site. Staff were so friendly and helpful and the facilities were top notch. Bar and take-away were good value. We stayed on a lake view pitch. Beautiful view - enjoyed sitting in the sunshine watching the swallows fly around us and taking in the view. Handy spot for walking the coast path and visiting Mevagissey and Gorran Haven.

Local attractions

Pensagillas Park has tourist information on site if you’re stuck for info on what to do, but any problem you're likely to have will be trying to narrow your list down… Pensagillas is near busy St Austell and one of the closest parks to one of Cornwall’s biggest attractions, the mighty Lost Gardens of Heligan a mile and a half away. Leave the car behind and reach Heligan by the Pentewan Valley Trail, which links St Austell to the gardens and to Pentewan via a scenic valley; you can hire bikes on the trail or take to the water at Pentewan, which has a fine beach and two sailing clubs with boats for hire (there’s also a St Austell Ales pub here for real ale adorers). Mountain bikers and the energetic should beetle towards the bike routes of Bodmin Moor, taking a pitstop at Jamaica Inn, an almost essential stop in these parts. The inn, the setting of Daphne du Maurier’s smuggling novel of the same name, has a museum telling the tales of Cornish smugglers throughout the centuries, and apparently several ghosts too…
