  • Camping in the grounds of a former WW2 Spitfire base in Cornwall
  • Five minutes' drive from Perranporth; Newquay 20 minutes
  • Parachuting, flying lessons, skid car training and archery
Buckle up for adventure on land, sea and in the air at Spitfire Park, a 400-acre former RAF Spitfire base just off the South West Coast Path near Perranporth, Cornwall. With spacious grassy pitches for camping in a field next to an old control tower, this site has all sorts of adventurous activities to try out. During your stay, depending on when you're here, options may include parachuting, flying lessons, skid car training, archery, pistol shooting and hangliding; there are also dual-control cars where the over-12s can learn to drive in a safe and laidback environment. Activities aside, this is a handy place to park yourself: there are modern toilets, showers and washing-up areas for guests to use, as well as a café and a playground. The coast is within easy walking distance and the closest sandy beach is a five-minute drive down the road in Perranporth. After soaking up some sunshine by the water, head into the town centre for supermarkets, pubs, cafés and souvenir shops. Want to leave the car at home? You can also travel between the site and Perranporth by bus.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked We really enjoyed this park it’s very simple but our 2 year old loved watching the planes and parachute jumpers from our tent . Relaxed environment only a few rules of no noise after 10 and fires and bbqs off the grass . Got to pick where we wanted to pitch our tent and was nice to enjoy a cold beer from the bar in the sun .

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Very chilled atmosphere. The staff are lovely and down to earth not just corporate lackies. The food in the cafe is really good. The value for money is spot on. I'd recommend if you're in a campervan/motor home it's park where you like more or less and free wifi and nice hot showers.

Liked -

Disliked We originally planned to stay at this campsite for four nights, but after just one, we felt we had no choice but to leave due to an extremely unpleasant and unsafe experience.

A group of campers near us were playing loud music and shouting until around 5am. Far worse, one individual became aggressive toward my 65-year-old father—threatening him with violence and calling him a “Welsh C**t”. Their behaviours throughout the night was aggressive, disturbing, loud and included concerning treatment of their dogs as well in the morning.

We didn’t feel safe leaving our trailer tent or my father’s camper unattended around these individuals.

While we understand the campsite can’t always control who turns up or how they behave initially, the real issue was how the situation was handled. We reported everything to the owner and staff the next morning. They told us they had a zero-tolerance policy and that the group would be removed from the site that day.

But they weren’t. The group was allowed to stay, which only made the situation worse and more tense. We ended up cutting our trip short and leaving after just one night. Another couple nearby who had just arrived for a single night also packed up and left early.

To make matters worse, there was no warden on site during the night, and no emergency contact number provided for guests to report serious problems outside of office hours. This left us feeling completely unsupported during what was a very distressing situation.

We left feeling unsafe, disappointed, and let down. We strongly urge the campsite to take future incidents like this more seriously and to provide better support for guests, especially during the night.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear that your stay with us was affected in this way.

We want to be clear that we do not tolerate aggressive or antisocial behaviour on our site, and once this incident was reported to us the following morning, we took immediate steps to address it. Both the owner and site manager spoke directly with those involved and took what we believed to be appropriate action based on the information available at the time.

From our conversations with you, we were under the impression that the situation had been resolved and that you were satisfied with how it had been handled. Had we been made aware that you still felt unsafe or uncomfortable, we would have taken further steps to support you.

We would also like to clarify that all guests are given our site manager’s direct contact number at check-in. He lives on site and is available for out-of-hours concerns. We’re sorry if this wasn’t clear or if you didn’t feel able to reach out on the night.

We regret that your stay was cut short and hope you understand that we acted promptly and in good faith to resolve the issue once it was brought to our attention. Your comments will help us further improve communication and support for future guests

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Site was good., good location, reasonable facilities.

Disliked Although the showers are hot, they’re on a 5 second timer. So by the time you’ve touched your head once, it’s time to push the button again.

Unfortunately other users, weren’t the cleanest, and left shower rooms dirty and unusable at times. Needs a squeegee to move excess water/clean floor after individual use.

Using the hand dryers also tripped the electric every time, so needs an electrician pronto!

Local attractions

If nothing can beat a day at the beach, Spitfire Park has you covered: Perranporth's spacious beach is a five-minute drive down the road and has miles of golden sands, grass-topped dunes and a pretty seaside village next to it full of cafés and bars. Other resorts like Newquay (20 minutes) and Padstow (40 minutes) are also easily within your reach, as are spots on Cornwall's southern coast like Falmouth (40 minutes). You won't be scratching your head looking for family-friendly days out in this part of the world, as there are lots of kid-pleasing options about for you to choose from: Lappa Valley (20 minutes) with its vintage miniature railway, boating lake and mini golf is a more laidback pick, while for kids with endless energy there's also Camel Creek Adventure Park (40 minutes). Finding out about the local area is a breeze at the Royal Cornwall Museum (20 minutes), where you'll learn all about Cornwall's industrial heritage. For some natural history instead, Cornwall is well-known for its wealth of gardens – if you only have time to see one during your trip, make it the Eden Project (45 minutes).
