  • Countryside park under seven miles from Newquay airport
  • Managed wildlife haven: spot badgers, foxes, rabbits and kingfishers
  • Adventure playground and games room
What could be cleverer than flying to Cornwall for your holiday and thus avoiding motorway madness and hours of 'Are we there yet?' from the kids? Travelling light and posting your kit ahead of you, that's what. Tremendous Trethiggey Touring Park is less than seven miles from the airport at Newquay and frequently has guests to stay who do this very thing – what good sense. And even though it's in a stellar part of Cornwall with loads to see and do all around, what jolly good sense too to stay on site for a bit... for there's quite a lot to do. For starters, it's a carefully considered wildlife site if you want to have a species spotting wander: there are over 4,000 shrubs and trees on its countryside setting, badgers frequently visit, foxes live in the nearby fields and you should also see kingfishers, jays, buzzards and rabbits. Nature signs are dotted around the park detailing all the critters that live and visit there. For kids, the site has an adventure playground and a games room with pool tables and games machines. Trethiggey welcomes well-behaved dogs. There is also wifi available across the whole park for a reasonable fee.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food: Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant is nearby at Watergate Bay, and it's 16 miles or so from Newquay to Padstow and the four fish restaurants of Rick Stein. Or have surf, glorious surf, other watery sports and the building of many sandcastles with the kids at the glorious beaches of Newquay, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and clubs around to relax/party in once you've dried off. On Newquay's outskirts, put cheesy grins on the kids' faces with a whisk around award-winning and all-weather DairyLand Farm World, one of several kid-friendly days out around the area within an accessible drive: see also Flambards theme park at Helston, the Eden Project near St Austell, Crealy Great Advenure Park at Wadebridge and an unusual but gripping day out at Padstow's National Lobster Hatchery. Elsewhere around Cornwall, pick your passion and set off: historians can explore the old tin mines of World Heritage Site St Agnes or Cornwall's many historic and National Trust houses. Marine enthusiasts should have a look at Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium and the National Maritime Museum at Falmouth, and arty types can make their way to the galleries and artistic atmosphere of lovely St Ives.
