  • Small, cosy and family-run park a mile from Marazion
  • A short walk from St Michael's Mount
  • Free pool and spotless amenities
Sites near the coast are rather special. Particularly when they’re Cornish, less than a mile from a beauteous bay, and with a heated indoor pool in which guests can wallow wrinkedly all the winter day if the mood so takes them – for free… Drive down a country lane surrounded by fields to reach small, family-run and exceedingly esteemed Wheal Rodney Holiday Park, a mile from Marazion and a short saunter to St Michael's Mount. It’s easy to drive to the other attractions of west Cornwall from here (the Lizard Peninsula, Land’s End and Penzance are all close by), but the kids won’t have time to say they’re bored before you’re at arty St Ives and the north coast, Helston and Flambards, or the Isles of Scilly from Penzance or Land's End. The majority of Wheal Rodney’s guests are families, but their welcome extends to all, dogs included, who’ll probably wag their tails at the countryside walks straight from the site and the list of dog-friendly Cornish beaches available in reception. The spotless facilities building has the site reception, shower blocks with free hot water, launderette and the aforementioned free swimming pool, open from 9am daily. Ice pack freezing and phone and gadget charging are also gratis for guests. Other facilities on site include an Elsan point, recycling and a shop for essentials: if your holiday equals not having to cook, the Fire Engine Inn with a temptingly tasty menu and beer garden is under 10 minutes’ stroll from Wheal Rodney. As with the site, dogs and children are whealy welcome too...

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite (large)

Liked: Excellent view from our pitch at the top of the campsite.

Disliked: Our pitch (23A) was mostly wet bare earth (presumably from tents) - we parked our campervan to the side of the pitch on grass. Facilities for males at Wheal Rodney have always been somewhat basic - minimal room in the 3 showers - only 2 toilets - with large numbers on site suggest this is inadequate.

From the manager: We are very glad that you have returned to our small site again this year. We are sorry that you disliked your pitch. Guests have been camping with us since March. Although we try to rotate the pitches this is not always possible in August so a few of the pitches have some bald patches. The grass to the side of you pitch was actually part of your pitch. You were parked in your pitch for your stay with us. Cornwall County Council require campsites of our size to have one male toilet, one urinal, 1 male shower and two male hand basins. We have two male toilets, three urinals, three male showers, three sinks and a separate baby changing cubical with sink within in the male facilities. We would of course love more but we do not have the room. Having just taken over the site in March we have been unable to make any changes to any of the facilities, we are hoping to do some needed upgrades during the winter season ready for next year. Hope to see you again.

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Excellent location, excellent staff very friendly and super helpful. Pitches are well spaced with lots of room and in a great location. Not a big site which means toilets/showers/shop/pool are close to all pitches. Very peaceful site, we have children aged 3, 7 & 8 and they could all play freely but the evenings where considerately quiet and everyone slept well. The shop has all basic nessecities along with washing machines and tumble dryers which where great. The pool was lovely, a good size and we never had to book to swim, just turn up and sign in. A short walk into Marazion town which was really lovely, with big play parks right on the beach. A great base to explore areas like St Ives by train, Penzance & Lands End

Route directions

If travelling in a caravan or large motorhome, don't try to reach the site by going through the town of Marazion. Instead, go through the village of Crowlas, pass The Star Inn (on your right) and then take a left at the crossroads (signposted Rospeath). Travel for 1.5 miles along the winding country lane without turning off. Pass under the bypass bridge and then bear a sharp left around the corner. Start going up the hill to Marazion and the site is just up the road on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

There are so many top-notch beaches around west Cornwall (25 within easy reach of Wheal Rodney) that it can be hard to pick where to stretch out on the sand/rookpool/surf at first… Marazion is a bonzer beach startoff point from Wheal Rodney, as not only it is a piffling mile away, but it has two beaches: the main Town Beach and a much quieter and hidden one at Steps Beach (the latter is dog-friendly all year round). Overlooking Town Beach is the medieval castle on St Michael’s Mount, the rocky island halfway along Mount’s Bay and now managed by the National Trust. Both are within strolling distance of Wheal Rodney: sail out to the island from Mount’s Bay for a harbour tour and a gawp at the subtropical gardens, viewable when peering down from the castle battlements. Fishing villages, clandestine coves and golden sands are speckled along the Cornish coast from Wheal Rodney: take a day at each if you can (the boss will understand) for fishing in Mullion and Porthleven, surfing at Sennen Cove and Praa Sands, diving and shipwreck hunting at Falmouth’s Porthkerris Beach, or just having a gape at the celebrated scenery of the Lizard’s Kynance and Kennack Sands. When sand is dusted from toes, Marazion town centre is a gem for art galleries, antiques and jewellery: Penlee House at Penzance three miles away and Tate St Ives seven miles north are also a big draw for artistes. Both towns have several other art galleries, more beaches (of course) and the opportunity to sing very loud and tuneless sea shanties with pirates at Penzance. The St Ives Bay Line from Penzance to St Ives is one of the most scenic you’ll see anywhere in the country; for added viewsomeness, walk to Penzance from Marazion along the South West Coast Path, stopping very frequently to snap the scenery at Mount’s Bay, Mousehole and the Lizard. Thirteen miles from Wheal Rodney towards the southwest, have your photo taken at the famous signpost at Land’s End, where also cordially recommended is partaking of a Cornish cream tea at the Land’s End restaurant. And while you’re in the area, stick around into the evening for a performance at the open-air Minack Theatre, 11 miles from Wheal Rodney in the direction of Land’s End. Its season runs from May to September, but theatre fiends can take a guided tour any time of year, something that also comes cordially recommended…
